Filming Endeavour in Oxford, Part Three
It seems that I run into this film crew everywhere I go now. I mean, really, I'm not stalking them. I simply can't turn a corner in Oxford without running headlong into a scene-on-pause. Always rife with classic automobiles and actors in costume, their sets are usually a photographic playground that I can't resist. I am so glad they're good sports.

In this instance, they are gathered in the street (Merton Street) outside the Wessex Bank (formerly the University of Oxford Philosophy Centre) and preparing to stage a hold up.

Filming Endeavour in Oxford, Part Two
On this fine, sodden, English morning, I was getting rained on from the moment my bus dropped me in town, so when I turned the corner onto Market street, I was unsurprised to find the loitering film crew of the TV series, Endeavour, probably waiting for any moment when water wasn't falling from the sky. They had another of their fantastic vintage buses in tow, so, of course, out came the camera.
It did come as a surprise when I realized that the bus in my viewfinder happened to be sheltering Shaun Evans, Roger Allam, and other cast members, all stylishly dodging the steady precipitation in which I was, at that very moment, standing. Whether for this fact or just the uncommon appearance of a Rolleiflex twin lens camera, it seemed that I had young Morse's attention, so I approached the door and asked if he wouldn't mind a photo to which he affably nodded.
But this was not my last encounter with the Endeavour crew, for the very next day ... continued in Part Three, coming soon.

Filming Endeavour in Oxford, Part One
I was walking through Radcliffe Square one day when there appeared before me a shiny, classic bus. And people. Classic people! With a bus! All set out perfectly photogenically, as if to test Dave to see if he's on top of things and carrying his camera today. Well, I am, ha!
And, no, it turns out that this scene was actually laid out for a crew filming the TV series, Endeavour, a frequent sight in Oxford, today using the Radcliffe Camera, the surrounding square, and outer wall of All Souls College as stage setting.
This is so frequent an occurrence, in fact, that there are still more photos to come. Stay tuned ...

A Couple of Incidental Still Lifes
I have made a couple of still lifes recently with which I ended up quite happy. Of course, I’m always aiming to like my results, but still life isn’t my usual thing, and, anyway, these photos were different because they had both been created to serve another purpose. Funny as it sounds, they are the incidental byproducts of a shift from Canon to Nikon. I’m not throwing up flags, taking up allegiances, or declaring a winner. My shift, itself, is incidental, too. The Canon was too heavy. The Nikon is lighter.
This transition required that I take test shots, some to test the Canon prior to sale, more later to test the Nikon when I received it. These two photos are from those rolls that were sacrificed to the cause. They picture objects that have a place in our house (or ‘had’ in the case of the fruit), because that’s all they needed to be. Pictures, successfully. I didn’t need to go far afield, I just needed to prove that the cameras worked.
The first still life is from the Canon F-1 which I can confirm, but for the light meter, still works. I looked around the house for a subject, and there was fruit on the kitchen table in a bowl, so I thought, “Why not? Fruit in a bowl!” Classic.

This next photo is from the new-to-me Nikon which also happens to function as it should. My transition was coming to its completion, plus I had a new camera with which to play, so I was taking the time and having fun with the composition. The dry flowers sit on our kitchen window sill. I wanted a careful under-exposure of the flowers with no risk of any parts of them blown out bright, almost 18% gray but tending towards silhouette. What looks like the sun out in the background is actually a reflection in a window just behind the flowers of the sun shining over my right shoulder through another window. Due to this situation and to the intentional under-exposure, the sun provides both foreground and background light for the subject without erasing the finer details or tonal variation of either the subject or the blurred background.

Sketching a Library | The Lunchtime Portraits
Oxford draws a lot of artists, so the Bodleian Library is not a surprising place to find someone with a sketching table and project. This is local painter, Merlin Porter. While we were talking, we exchanged business cards, but not before he busied himself with his own card. What happened in that very brief moment was an instant pencil portrait of me with my camera. Coolest thing ever.

The Assembly of a William Blake Press
In preparation for Copper Impressions - The 18th Century Printmaking Revolution, an exhibition and printmaking demonstration at Christ Church Library in Oxford, carpenters worked alongside Professor Michael Phillips, internationally recognized William Blake scholar, to assemble the pieces of a copper-plate printing press that Phillips used in his workshops.
This press, a working replica of the one used by 19th-century poet, painter, and printmaker, William Blake, was built locally by Buckinghamshire maker/designer, Josh Howard-Saunders, and it arrived at The Library just following its recent stay in Oxford’s Ashmolean Museum.

Sick & Tired | The Lunchtime Portraits
I can easily imagine this to be one of life's less rewarding tasks, sitting around in a mascot costume, likely for very spare wages, only to drum up business for someone else. Just today, in fact, I watched some total stranger pinch one of this gentleman’s eyes as he walked past. So on the day that I took this photo, I was unsurprised at this honest display of emotion.
Due to the fast film and bright daylight, I had to stop down to about f16 just to be able to shoot at 1/500th of a second, my fastest shutter speed.

Solar Eclipse, 20 March 2015
I have seen solar eclipses in my lifetime, and, although they still hold a fascination for me, I was more interested on this occasion in the phenomenon of an eclipse as an aspect of our culture and the ways in which we observe it.
