i want to be radioactive but not like lethally or anything. just slightly above average so that when people try to take photos of me the image is grainy and blurred and geiger counters click ominously when i'm nearby. y'know, fun stuff.

Time to talk about Chris Pike my beloved (and also functionally my oc at this point, oops...). Look under the cut to see how mine diverges from canon, most likely including some spoilers, as well as discussions of ableism, body horror, and me wanting canon to do better.

The chief difference between me and canon is that we’re not having any ‘disability as body horror’ or ‘disability as end of life’ - style ableism in this house. There is absolutely no need for modern canon to treat his disabled body like a jumpscare and something disgusting, horrific, and monstrous. This piece in particular does a very good job articulating some of my arguments.

Additionally, the radiation science is a bit off (though it was literally the sixties after the post-atomic horror so it’s understandable): the reason why Pike looks and acts the way he does in The Menagerie is mostly because they couldn’t get the original actor back, so they tried to do whatever they could to not have him speak and have him heavily made up so they could maybe squeak it past people who might remember The Cage and Jeffrey Hunter (not the best option)

However, I don’t have to follow canon’s rules, and I don’t need to take the shortcuts they made in the sixties, and I can do better because it’s the 2020s and it’s time for things to change.

That being said, he does know his future and he is burdened by the weight of that, which is understandable; it’s a lot to deal with, but he’s accepted it’s the right thing to do. 

He does get irradiated and does end up using a wheelchair after a long recovery time from his illness, but in personality and in bearing, he’s still the same Chris Pike.

Mine’s storyarc, then, is not, ‘oh no, I get disabled it’s a fate worse than death and I don’t get to be pretty anymore, the horror!’ it’s ‘okay, how can I adjust to this new life and make it work for me while making a better future after this trauma?’

He has to be careful, as he has a weakened immune system, fibrosis (resulting in weakness in his legs and spine, hence the wheelchair), is prone to fatigue, dizziness, and headaches, and has some lingering burns and scars, a lot of which look pretty bad. However, he gets right back in the captain’s chair no matter what anybody else thinks and doesn’t let it stop him, and he certainly doesn’t want to live in a fantasy world. He accepts his reality for what it is. 

He’s one of the reasons why the stairs in the bridge configurations begin to go away as time goes on; he’s a very strong advocate for people who have it worse than he does, and wants to use his position to help people.

All that being said, I know it’s still very early in SNW’s run, and maybe they’ll do something fantastic and revolutionary that’ll make me eat my words. I really, really hope they do, but with how much of a persistent thread this is and how much it haunts him so far, I’m not sure as though they will. I would love to be wrong, as a lot of the rest of the show seems wonderful so far.

And, this is not to say that all the other Pikes are bad: I promise I love all of you and your portrayals no matter what you think of canon and I really want to write with you, I just feel really strongly about this personally.

- i've probably said this one before but!! rlly bright blue eyes from the radiation of the nukes, i hav a similar hc for jack, that's why my deisgn for him has blue n red eyes!!! (disclaimer i don't rlly know how radiation works but also it's mc so)

- he likes taking michael with him when he's wandering around the server!! teaches him history n tells little storys

- very fidgety/feels like he needs to keep moving all the time (this is projecting )

- continuing with my 'tubbo knows how to do welding' hc, he likes to add little touches into his and his friends tools n armor!! like signatures, little drawings, details, etc

- spins in circles when bored

- likes to cook :D doesn't mean he's good at it but he tries

- easily startled

- dyes part of his hair blond n another part neon green :00
