Thank you, Buzzfeed!
You smell amazing as you are.
For quite a few years, I have been selling cosmetics (bath, body, lips, etc.) with my business, Radical Works. I’m going to keep this short, as there’s no need for fluff.
For my non-US fans, this may seem like an odd post. For my US fans, I need to tell you guys something.
Have you ever smelled yourself? Seriously, have you ever woken up in the morning, and took a good whiff of your skin? What does it smell like? If you are not sure, I can take a good guess. It smells like you, because it is you. Does it smell bad? Revolting? Probably not. You know why? Because that smell is unique to you. It’s the natural smell of your skin, of your body.
But why are we, in the mass media and elsewhere, are being told that the smell of our bodies is unpleasant? Is it really?
Ladies and gentlemen, in my line of work, along with my hobbies, I have smelled many people and creatures. We all know the ripe smell of someone coming right out of the gym and they haven’t showered. We all know the smell of someone who forgot to put on deodorant. But do you know the smell of a human? Believe it or not, it’s not unpleasant. It’s actually comforting, as somewhere in your brain, you feel happy when you take in the smell of your best friend as you hug. You feel safe being clustered next to your friends around a tabletop game. You feel warm when you smell that special person passing you by.
I’m not a psychiatrist, but I’m willing to guess that what you are smelling is not cologne, nor perfume, or even fresh soap from the shower. So why are we being told our natural scent needs to be washed away, needs to be hidden?
There’s an unfortunate truth to that question that many will find to be odd: Because someone in a company wants people to feel like they -need- their product. Commercials and advertisements all over the US (I can’t speak for other countries, as I have not witnessed the commercials shown elsewhere) are telling each and every person that a quick spritz of whatever they are selling will fix you up, because you stink. Not because you have just got out of the gym, not because you have just mowed your lawn, but because you woke up and you do not smell like a bouquet of flowers or a mountainous forest.
Yes, I make cosmetics, but I am not in the business of cosmetics to sell you something you need. I am in cosmetics because I want to sell you something you want. What you smell like on a day to day basis is not unpleasant; it’s your natural smell. Do you feel like smelling like pancakes today? I have that for you. Do you want to smell like an old library book? I got you covered.
Do you -need- to smell like these things? No. I don’t make needs, I make wants. You need to eat, you need to sleep, you need to breathe. You don’t need to mask your natural smell. But if you -want- to, that’s where I am.
