I just finished your book and IMAGINE MY SURPRISE WHEN I LOOK TO THE ACKNOWLEDGEMENTS AND ITS NOT WRITTEN BY AN AMERICAN!!!!!!!! This is easily the most accurate portrayal of America in fiction I've read in a while. Jump scare warning was needed, had to go rant on Tumblr. (Anyway loved your book, love your writing style, really liked Sherman and related to Riley a bunch ok byeeeeeeee)

AHHHHHHHH thank you so much! Yes, I often feel like an anthropologist studying modern-day America just by dint of reading so many books and comics, and watching so many films set there! It's a fascinating place. This book is my thesis paper!

I can only claim partial credit for my portrayal of the good ol' US of A - my initial draft was crammed full of international spellings and silly assumptions (there was originally a functional train system in Sunnylake...) that my marvellous Betas, agent, editor and proofreader helped me weed out!

Hi Rachel! Is there a particular vibe you're drawn to, when writing your WIPs?

the problem is that i vibe with vibes so much. like, give me an aesthetic that feels immersive for me as a reader and a writer.

for the ghost boarding school story –

ivy dripping from old houses. a decaying boarding school full of secrets. wildflowers swaying in breeze. ink-stained girls dabbling with the occult. unfamiliar shapes moving in the reflections of antique mirrors. river water dripping from uniforms. chalk dust and blood staining the floor. ghosts whispering from within the walls. being a teenager is a liminal space. it's dark academia, it's a horror story, it's coming of age through the trauma you've gone through...

meanwhile my college vampire story –

what if you (half-monster, half-human) and your fellow queer friends (all enablers) try to fistfight other horrifying creatures in the parking lot of denny's in the middle of nowhere, ohio. bridgewater triangles, the agony of being seen, shared college hoodies, too much coffee, rural monsters, late night runs to greasy diners, urban legends, study sessions, and the power of friendship as you're growing up.

2. Which OC spends the most time on their appearance?

Lillian and Cecily, for similar but not exact reasons. Lillian knows she's dressing for an Effect but also she generally wants to look pretty and fashionable. Cecily can and will use her appearance as a weapon and it has staved off war and also subverted her twin brother the king's plans to keep her daughter/his heir with him and not with her mother.

(Look when your royal sister walks barefoot through a city in a plain grey dress and pointedly unbound hair to kneel before you in an incredibly public fashion to tearfully beg you to give her custody of her daughter, it looks incredibly bad to the populace if you don't do it. YOU know the tears are fake. Your sister knows the tears are fake. Your closest advisor knows the tears are fake but he wanted you to just give your sister her daughter in the first place so that doesn't really matter. The commons and most nobles don't know the tears are fake. Your pretty and pious sister just fuckin walked barefoot through the city to petition you with the common populace. You are not winning this one.)

19. Does your OC(s) have any tics/ tells?

Laeriel tends to repeat herself in sentences almost poetically for someone who is also pretty plainspeaking. That at first happened on accident and then I decided it worked really well for my vision of how the Noldor deal with Quenya and how Laeriel was raised by a snooty oldskool quenya speaker but in and amongst sindar.

Everybody raises an eyebrow. I try to catch them. It still sneaks through.

Hi everybody! Some of you will know me from my main blog, @radley-writes. 

This is a new space created with my younger followers in mind - though anyone who’s interested in my YA and MG projects is welcome!

I am a tradpub author! My debut’s in the works at a Big 5 publisher - for more details, check out my (as-of-yet unfinished) WIP page.

I’m happy to answer any questions about the tradpub process. I’m a firm believer in demystifying things for all prospective authors out there.

What do I write?

Mostly YA SFF - but some Adult, too. This is why I’ve decided to divide my blog, so minors and folks uncomfortable with graphic content have a space where they can safely interact with my work. If you’re after my Adult projects and afterdark dorkiness, head to my main!
