How is FLOAT coming along? Ramble to me about the space pirate wlw! Plz!

FLOAT is sort of dead in the water (ha) after I hit a wall where I didn’t know what to do, and I couldn’t exactly skip it to keep writing because it’s pretty flipping integral to the plot.

River becomes a diver for the ship, right? The Endurance crew hasn’t had a diver since their last one didn’t resurface, but she has shapeshifting powers, so she can go deeper and further than anybody before her.

They dive for materials, for exploration, and sometimes — for alien artifacts.

The beginning of the end of the plot centers on River bringing up some Significant Artifact, but I can’t figure out what, and since I can’t figure out what, I can’t really write it.

Instead I write tender promise scenes between River and Aspen where Aspen is worried over her girl going down to do one of the most dangerous jobs around, and River promises to come back, forehead touches, kisses that might be their last, it’s all very touching.

and ohhhhh, i’ll limit myself to five big ones because i’m sure i can ramble for hours about this sort of thing. for some extra context, i count ‘inspiration’ as anything from aesthetic influence to things that made me passionate about writing in the first place, so these cover a pretty broad range!

star wars — this is a huge one (especially aesthetically in wayfarer) as it’s been a big part of my life since i was in elementary school, and it’s very dear to me in spite of the absolute disaster that erupts in the fanbase every time literally anything happens :’) 

mass effect — considering that this is my favorite game franchise of all time, it’s fitting that it would make this list. this is another one that inspires some settings & aesthetic choices in wayfarer, but overall my love for this piece lies with the moral complexity, tight-knit crew of complex characters, and the beautiful job the team did with conveying the scale and stakes of the plot.

the lord of the rings — another big one, but i think it’s less prominent in my work itself. as a kid lotr was read to me as a bedtime story (and more often than not, the person reading it to me would start to fall asleep and i would decide that we weren’t done and i would read it aloud to myself) and i credit those books as a large part of what led me to start writing, as it introduced me to the magic that one can find in fiction.

final fantasy — this is actually a smaller one, but deserves a place on the list because final fantasy xv was actually the thing that inspired me to write sevensworn, solely because i was in love with the blend of fantasy & modern settings, the life-or-death road trip trope, and the characters themselves.

red dead redemption 2 — i’ll be the first to recognize the genre jump that just happened. this is easily one of the best games i have ever (and likely will ever) play, and my inspiration rests in the (imo) near-perfect narrative they tell throughout it. the intricacies of the characters, the inter-gang politics alongside the wider turn of the century politics in the american west, the main character’s stunningly written arc, and the care & attention given to each character dynamic make this easily one of my biggest inspirations, though it doesn’t show much in the genres i write. also, i really like horses :’)

there are plenty of others i could talk about (honestly, most of my interests could make an appearance on this list) but for the sake of pretending i’m capable of giving a brief answer, i’ll end it there! thank you so much for the ask <3

Look there are multiple different ways I've tried to write marvel OCs because we all know I rewrite shit. It's what I do. It's who I *am* (have the sort of reincarnation of Baldur marvel style for kicks)

“You knew,” Elisabet said.

Heimdall shrugged.

“You know everything,” she said, resigned. Her skirts billowed around her when she dropped to the dais steps of the bifrost. “Is Thor alright?”

“He has found friends,” Heimdall replied, staring out into the vastness of space.

Elisabet laughed. “Of course he has. I suppose if one of us was to be banished, at least it was the personable one.”

“You are personable,” Heimdall said. “You can’t help it.”

She snorted. “Do I go around calling myself Baldur now?”

“Baldur is not the sum of who you are.”

“I’m glad you think so.”

“No one who knows you believes otherwise.”

“Odin wants to.”

Heimdall shrugged again. “Odin has certain blind spots.”

Elisabet stared at him. Heimdall continued to stare into space. She decided not to ask if he had done that on purpose.

“But you have your other brother to console you.”

“Sometimes you aren’t very nice, Heimdall.”

“Sometimes you ask all the wrong questions, Princess.”

That wasn’t fair, and Elisabet said so.

“You’re asking, ‘who am I?’” Heimdall said. “You know who you are.”

5. What character that you’re writing do you most identify with?

Well this one's hard. I don't usually write characters who are like me? I don't think? I sort of write characters whose brains work similarly to mine but more like who I want to be, often. If thaf makes sense.

For the ask thing - Can I pretty-please request a few songs for Neve? She's a firefighter from Dressage Dragons! A tomboy who's excellent at malicious compliance, she has a great Customer Service face for dealing with all the Karens she interacts with on a day-to-day basis. She exudes strong wine-aunt energy towards the MC, and comes over as friendly - but it's best not to forget that half her job is hunting & putting down feral dragons... Has big guns, in all senses of the word!
