something i love about project hail mary is how it takes the "refusal of the call" trope and turns it up a billion notches. there was never a "return of the call" and "acceptance of the call" that followed. it was straight-up refusal

and grace thought, for most of the story, that he did accept it. but he only finds out when all is done that he never did
