You walked down the street, holding your umbrella over your head as you held your bags and walked down the street. It was late at night, with the yellow street lamps and store lights illuminating the city. The rain pattered against the sidewalk as you walked down the street, creating an atmosphere of quietness and solemn. You glanced at a couple holding hands as you walked past an outdoor restaurant, with a blue roof covering the couple as they held hands and ate. You stood there for a second, the rain continuing to pour around you as you remembered.
The dates you two used to go on in the rain because he knew you loved the smell and romantics of the rain. The way he would hold your hand as you held an umbrella above the two of you, his warmth spreading through his hands through your whole body. The thought was bittersweet. You continued to walk down the street, finally breaking away from the couple having dinner to make it to your car. When you had been together, it had just felt so perfect. Everything felt like a dream, he was perfect, and you were happy.
But as time continued to go on, he changed, and you, along with your relationship, started to crack. The late nights that you would spend watching movies together or taking late night walks turned into nights spent alone in your big, lonely bed. He became more distant, and you desperately tried to try to reignite that flame, but the attempts you made were never two sided. Dates were skipped. Late night calls were made, and eventually, you got to the point where it was like living with a stranger. To know and love someone for so long, and to get to a point where you never recognize them anymore? You were lonely, and couldn’t take the pain, so you broke it off. He agreed, and he left the next morning, leaving no trace of his love and existence in your once shared apartment except for a single polaroid on your wall of your second anniversary.
The rain continued to pour as you walked, and you felt a single tear fall down your cheek as you stopped to look at your once favorite restaurant, and there he was. In his button down sitting across from a girl, holding her hand as he looked at her in adoration, with those same eyes he used to look at you with whenever you laughed, or made a bad joke. You loved him, you really did. The way he made your heart flutter, the way he made you smile, the way he made you feel. It had been over a year, but it still made your tears fall with the sight of the once love of your life, sitting happily across from a woman that wasn’t you. You turned your head to walk away as you wiped a tear from your face. He had moved on, and had changed. There was nothing you could do about it.
Because he wasn’t the guy you knew and feel in love with anymore.
