Midcentury Autels Autel is a conjunction of the words auto and hotel, much like how motel is a conjunction of the words motor and hotel. 

The Northwold Autel in Poplar Bluff, Missouri has been demolished and replaced by a bank.

The All-American Autel in Salt Lake City, Utah has been demolished.

The Siesta Autel in Baltimore, Maryland is still operating and looks fairly similar but now goes by the name Siesta Motel.

The Rainbow Autel in Chilhowie, Virginia has been demolished but the sign still exists and was moved down the road to a storage facility, where it is still displayed.

The Rainbow Autel sign has been restored and is on display atop a storage unit about 25 miles up the road from its original Chilhowie, Virginia location. The motel has since been demolished. The Robert E Lee motel sign is also on display at the same storage unit in Bristol.

For those wondering, Autel is another word for Motel that didn’t seem to catch on. It’s a conjunction of the words Auto and Hotel - much like how Motel is a conjunction of the words Motor and Hotel.
