What tropical rainforest plants (not trees) could be adapted to live in my character's backyard in Istanbul, Turkey? Ignore things like endangered plants, recently extinct plants, so on, my world throws all of that off. I basically am just interested in climate suitability and any kind of articifical environment requirements like a greenhouse.

Rainforests are generally warm, humid and shadowy. They're also sunny in the occasional spots and when it's sunny it's really sunny, but with all those tall trees blocking the sun it's generally the former three things. Which is to say your character won't grow epiphytes (like orchids) because they won't make it unless they plan on having indoor plants as well. In Which case, I also recommend bromeliads. They make nice indoor plants but they also stand a chance in their garden given ample shade, given the fact that your character can actually plant them in soil. Which is a no can do for epiphytes which like to hang out on tree branches with their roots free in the air for easy access to humid air and through that water.

What also grows in rainforests however are poinsettias and bougainvilleas and both of those just love a sunny spot outside. Or passion flowers and monkey brush vines. Coffee plants need a lot of shade again, which is to say shielding from direct sunlight, other than they're perfectly happy to grow in warmer climates. Pitcher plants are also incredibly common in rainforests and while they like a nice sunny spot, they also required a great deal of humidity to thrive properly. Cacao plants could technically also work for a garden, given ample protection from sun and wind since they only grow nestled into the shadows of the forest protected by gigantic sun-blocking trees.

Some of these plants will require a lot of water from your character, others won't. Just like with shade and sunshine it would benefit them to figure out which ones have similar needs and planting those together to make caring for them a little easier. Given that humidity is a requirement for some rainforest plants they should definitely look into getting a greenhouse as well to grow, for example, pitcher plants and maybe even a few epiphytes. Yet poinsettias would be a-okay just growing in their backyard without any further protection. (But they do need short days to develop their signature red or otherwise coloured bracts.) So it all depends a little what your character has in mind. And if anything goes, they should aim for being able to provide shade and humidity to the plants that need it. Which greenhouses and trees or palms or huge shrubs would do the trick for.
