Heather, Dagur, Rainier, and Mala in my HTTYD 3 wip (15ish years after HTTYD 2)
More details about their family below
My boy Rainier whomst I love dearly
Dagur and Mala's son
Sometimes called Dagurson (which he dislikes), often called Rainier the Relentless (which he won't admit that he really likes).
He tries to be like his mother as much as possible. But there are some parts of him he clearly gets from his father (his red hair, his nose, his eyebrows, his anger...)
He used to idolize his father when he was young and naive, but that was before he knew about his past. That was before the accident...
Now he wants nothing to do with him.
But Mala is frequently busy and can be somewhat distant. So he spends a lot of time with his aunt Heather when he can. She's the closest he has to a friend. Peers his age are either too childish or unruly or else shy away from him because of his position.
At just fifteen, he has so much weight on his shoulders. He is the only child of two powerful leaders. His existence unites their tribes. He cannot afford to be wreckless or selfish. He has to be intelligent, strong, and brave. He has to be perfect. He hopes that one day he will be.
The Wings of War Chapter 5: Reunion
Summary: After months apart, Dagur is reunited with loved ones on Berk.
Preview:
As Berk grew from a tiny dot on the horizon to rapidly approaching shore, Dagur became overcome with a feeling of giddiness that Shattermaster seemed to sense. The green Gronckle buzzed with as much anticipation as his rider.
“You excited, boy?” Dagur chuckled. “Yeah, me too.” He glanced over his shoulder at Heather, who flew by his side on Windshear. Heather’s pale cloak was like a matte imitation of her dragon’s silvery carapace. Her long, dark braid trailed behind her. “And you, sister?” Dagur asked, squinting. It was an unseasonably sunny day, and the light reflecting from the Razorwhip’s scales rivalled the sun. “Looking forward to seeing a certain axe-wielding blonde?”
His sister shot him a wry grin. “I haven’t the faintest idea what you mean.”
“Ha!”

love finding out/creating new details about characters as im writing them. just decided that rainier (dagur's son, an oc) used to call hiccup "uncle ippup" as a toddler and that astrid is his favourite member of the haddock family
writing my oc rainier and mala (his mother). for context -- this is just after breakfast
When she finally spoke again, it was to outline her tasks for the day. She planned to speak with some merchants about a trade route and see if she could speak with Chieftain Hiccup about a new dragon training program he wanted her input on. She went on and on, describing all the things she was going to do that Rainier noted did not involve him.
He tried his luck again.
“Mother...is there any chance that I might accompany you today? Perhaps I could help with something.”
Mala wiped the corners of her mouth with a cloth. “There’s no need, Rainier. I want you to have some time to enjoy yourself.”
Rainier blinked. “I would enjoy coming along with you.”
Mala sighed. She spoked gently. “Rainier, you’re with me every day on Caldera Cay. For the few days that we’re here, I’d like you to—”
“I’m with you everyday because I learn from you! I want to—” He saw the look on his mother’s face. “I...did not mean to interrupt.”
“And yet, you did,” she said calmly.
“I apologize.”
“Hm. What were you saying?”
“I only ask to be given some responsibility here—some task that I can complete and not feel as if I’m wasting my time.”
Mala raised her eyebrows. “You think being here is a waste of time?”
“O-Of course not! Not what you’re doing anyway, but I’m not doing anything at all.”
Mala folded her hands together. “Well, that’s just the problem, isn’t it? You’ve had ample opportunity to connect with the other leaders’ children here, yet you’ve spent your time sulking with Valkyrie instead.”
“But Mother, these children—you can’t expect me to—”
“Yes I can, Rainier, and I do.” She leaned forward and said each of her words clearly. “You don’t seem to understand that these children are not simply nuisances for you to scoff at. They are the future leaders of the Archipelago—the very allies who you will treat with and possibly fight alongside. One among them might even be a future consort. In the years to come, you will want a strong foundation with them. You will want them to see you as trustworthy and dependable. Thus far, all you’ve shown is that you’re aloof, even rude, perhaps. You want responsibility? Fine. Your task is to be sociable.”
“Mother,” Rainier protested, though he knew he’d already lost. “Please anything, but—”
“And make a real effort,” she concluded. It was clear that that was to be the last word on the subject.
shower thoughts about my httyd ocs
rainier's reasons for resenting nia seem surface level at first - he's quiet, reserved, and serious; she's outgoing, bubbly, and acts on impulse.
but it's not just that that bothers him, not even that she seems to get along with his father better than he does -- she has a perfect life: a life he would give anything to have, and she seems to take so much of it for granted.
her father bayana doesnt have a dishonourable past like rainier's father dagur does. perhaps bayana had some issues with the dragon riders and silkspanners when he first arrived in the archipelago, but that pales in comparison to all the harm dagur inflicted on dragons and dragon riders in his youth (and the fact that he was imprisoned by another chieftain for three years). and what's more, bayana is known for being shrewd and strategic. he doesn't try to smash his way through problems like...some people....
nia's mother, yuka is sweet and encouraging - never stingy with praise or physical affection. rainier vaguely remembers being closer with his mother mala when he was younger, but things changed over time. either he changed, or she did...or both. and now the most he can expect from her is a nod of approval, or the hint of a smile. a raised brow followed by "well done" from mala will make rainier's entire day. meanwhile, yuka will kiss her daughter on the cheek and nia squirms impatiently, as if her mother's love is something to be embarrassed about.
and not only does nia have the admiration of the kids on berk (who rainier never feels comfortable around), but she has several younger siblings. rainier cant say for certain that he'd get along well with siblings, but he knows he would be a protective and responsible older brother if given the chance. he'd never let harm come to a child in his care the way harm came to him when he lost his eye. and he thinks wistfully...perhaps selfishly...he would be able to share the weight of his responsibilities.
nia has the future of one tribe resting on her shoulders, and a line of younger siblings to help carry the load. both the defenders of the wing and the berserkers look to rainier as their heirs. he's long given up hope of his aunt heather having a child to rule the berserkers or his mother having another child.
so everything falls to him. and as much as he wants to be worthy of that responsibility, he can't help but feel that it's too much for him.
Ok so a new thing I've decided about Rainier (my eternally grumpy oc who is the teenage son of Dagur and Mala) is that
A) he absolutely worships Throk (probably wishes Throk were his dad tbh); and
B) he really wishes he had siblings or cousins who could share the responsibility of being heir to both the Beserkers and the Defenders
He's also very close with his aunt Heather. All of these factors lead to conversations where Rainier not so slyly implies that Heather should see Throk as a potential suitor. And I think a surly little wet blanket like Rainier playing match maker is hilarious.
And every time Heather's like: No, Rainier, I'm not interested.
Rainier: What's wrong with Throk? Wouldn't he make a suitable match?
Heather (a lesbian): There's nothing wrong with him, I'm just not interested. We wouldn't be in love.
Rainier:...well you don't have to be in love with someone for them to be a suitable match.
Heather: *sighs* Rainier...
Rainier: And you certainly don't have to be in love to have children—
Heather: Rainier!
Rainier: I mean, just look at my parents...
Heather: RAINIER
*for context, the dagur/mala marriage is not going well in this wip
