A rant because I woke up thinking about them, and I feel the need to tell people. (More below the cut.)
The (majority of) hate for rainvik comes from two main misunderstandings:
The misunderstanding of their story arcs.
The misunderstanding of the characters themselves.
People like to act as if Havik forced Rain to do what he did. Let's not forget that Rain CHOSE to be with Havik. Out of all his options, and trust me, he had options, he picked Havik.
If you read through Rain's intros, you notice a noteworthy number of people are after him. Bi-han wants him. Shao wants him. Reiko, even if by proxy, wants him. Shang Tsung wants him. Quan Chi wants him. Nitara, I will leave it open to debate, but I'm sure she'd be happy to keep him around. Bottom line: Rain went with Havik. Maybe something happened between them off-screen that somehow never got mentioned. (Curse you, Dominic.) But I digress.
It's not like Havik had a gun to Rain's head. When Rain came to Havik, the agreement was that Rain would flood the city. There was no implication that Rain had second thoughts till after, nor was there any implication that Rain couldn't have backed out at any moment. He killed all those people and didn't feel bad till later.
Even his remorse can be debated. I'll return to that point soon.
The general, usually incorrect, fanon has dubbed Havik as an abuser and a lunatic. People are typically aversive to rainvik because they see it as abuser x victim, with Rain being the poor, innocent victim. Really, I think Rain has as much potential toxicity as Havik.
Back to his debatable remorse: In certain intros, you see him reflect on his actions, seemingly regretful. Yet, in other intros, he seems to have this attitude of, "Yeah, I killed half a million people. You should be scared of me." Even in at least one intro saying something along the lines of, "I don't feel the need to explain this majorly deplorable thing I did." Those don't sound like the words of a truly regretful person. You could even go as far as to say Rain is proud of such a feat of strength.
If you ask me, they're a match made in hell. They deserve each other. Their breakup was tragic, though. You could hear the pain in Havik's voice, lol.
Also, I already made this rant.
But in all seriousness, you don't have to like rainvik, just stop acting like it makes zero sense.
I seriously got called a proshipper once for liking rainvik. Though it was from a woman who got mad that I assumed Frost was Asian. And she shipped kuaifrost at that. Like girl, those are your cousins...
I'm sorry for assuming that the lady who lives in Asia with a bunch of Asians was Asian. "Erm, she has light hair!! Erm, she has blue eyes!!" She also has ice powers. What's your point? I hope they know Asians can have blue eyes too...
Yes, I'm still mad about that. I was 15 and she got a whole squadron of adults on me, for what? It's probably because the woman is European. White genocide and allat. She ships reimei too, so I better not hear her talking about what's a proship ever again.
