In this Highlands Scottish hotel the old tennis courts have been turned into a wonderful productive garden with raised beds producing vegetables, herbs and cut flowers. The fencing had a selection of Lathyrus odoratus (sweet pea) cultivars that had a wonderful scent.

First okra from our bucket garden. Okra just doesn’t do well in our soil so I’m trying this technique and… results!

Fall is the perfect time to build a raised composting bed, since the materials are readily available and have all winter to decompose. The bed is comprised of alternating layers of organic materials and soil, topped with a layer of soil. Raised beds offer significant benefits: They have better drainage, very little soil disturbance, and higher yield per square foot. Soil in raised beds warms up sooner in the spring, so you can plant earlier.

Raised Beds, 2021

Crop rotation 3, Zone 8B

Raised beds have been amended with compost and a light layer of bone meal. The dominant crop this year will be potatoes and shall take up the entirety of the first bed, both halves.

While turning my soil I found a few volunteer soft neck garlics hidden among the strawberries. They have been transplanted to the back bed.

Potatoes are sitting out in bright light and starting to put off shoots. They will be planted within the month of March.

Planted part of my 1st fall garden, trying a second round of tomatoes (accidentally got mostly cherry tomatoes) broccoli and cauliflower. Will plant peas, spinach, lettuce, and maybe a few other things this weekend. Also experimenting with raw wool fleeces as mulch for the pathways in addition to mulch in the raised beds.
