Why tf do people hate raisins like Raisin Bran? BOMB. Outmeal raises cookies? BOMB. Those little packets of raisins from school? BOMB. Wtf is with the hate against raisins I Stan raisins.

Why do grapes and plums specifically have words for their dried counterparts?

I've been going down a rabbit hole recently about how and where raisins and prunes got their names. I understand the etymology of the two (coming from French, probably from goods that had to be dried for shipping, thus the dried fruit adopts the Latin name), but I am now wondering why grapes and prunes specifically? There are a few obscure examples of chilli peppers or berries having different names for their dried counterparts, but nothing mainstream. Were grapes and plums the only fruit being shipped from France to England? Were they the only ones that needed to be dried to survive the journey? Also, it seems like both "grape" and "plum" came into the vernacular after "raisin" and "prune" were already being used. Why did a separate name evolve, rather than something like the French "raisin sec" (dried grape)? I'm ever so curious!

Answer: As Xanne says, you need to consider why there's a specific word for anything: because people want to talk about it, and possibly differentiate it from other similar things.
