Chapter 192: Departing For Shimane

I really liked this little look into Zuma and the other delinquents' pasts. He provided a safe space for these lost kids to have fun without getting themselves hurt. I love Unji so much 🥹

It was really shocking to see everybody's curse intensify so quickly. Daiki can't walk, Zuma can't see, and even some of those closest to Momo can't remember her! I find it hard to believe that Seiko is losing memory of Momo, but Jiji can still see and remember her. Does that mean Jiji has more spiritual energy than Seiko?

Also, these bitches are back. Their journey seems to be off to a rocky start 😭 Everything is coming back around!!! We had some flashes back to the acro silky arc and serpo arc when they fought Kouki and her pygmies. Now we are moving to the cursed house arc when the Kito family were introduced, and perhaps the evil eye arc next. Time is a flat circle, the Dandadan is a flat circle. Everything comes back again eventually.

I feel like I’m on a different wavelength than a lot of other DanDaDan fans. I’m not reading it for the comedic stuff. I don’t like Jiji’s goofiness, for instance. What I love about DanDaDan are things like Zuma’s backstory: Scenes that have the capacity to change our perspective of life for the better; Scenes that show that people can make a big difference in each other’s lives. These scenes are much fewer and farther between than the bizarre yet intense action scenes, but I am grateful every time Tatsu gifts us with these, and I think the fact that they’re such small snippets in a vast pool of light-hearted fun is what makes them so much more impactful!

Zuma and Raiya in cotton candy clouds~ I didn’t originally plan for them to be nude, but as I drew, I realized none of Zuma’s outfits would go with the soft, pastel colors, and materials of his and Raiya’s coats felt too thick and bulky for the aesthetic. Even though Zuma’s fur coat looks soft and squishy, it felt like a thick barrier that took away from the intimacy of the picture. This way, the soft peaches and pinks blend well with the background, and the boys can share each others’ warmth on this heavenly bed of candy. The setting is a dreamland that’s a mix of heaven and Danmara. They aren’t supposed to be dead, just in a blissful place. It’s meant to symbolize their comfort in having each other in their lives and how their lives have since changed for the better. This picture was done with Crayola crayons on Canson watercolor paper, and I’m happy that the textured effect and pastel colors worked out well!
