#JackedKirby - Rakenstein’s Monster 💥💥💥 The Demon is one of Jack’s most balanced works in which he wrote and drew the series... his art is as impeccable as always, but the gothic horror angle of the subject matter lends itself to his specific writing style. Kirby’s sometime wordy prose is at its best in these 16 issues. One of the reasons I believe is because he is reinterpreting some older ideas from literature such as the Knights of the Round Tables Merlin, witchcraft & sorcery and even Frankenstein the mad scientist! 💥💥💥 #Issue11 of the series (August of 1973) we open with a full page splash of Etrigan witnessing passerby’s running in horror out of Gotham Central Park, and he wants to know what they are so afraid of. So he investigated further and on the next page we see the monstrous reason everyone is so scared... Rakenstein’s Monster!!! (Pic 1) 💥💥💥 The Monster himself is epic, as you can see in the solo split pic of the splash page (pic 2) and closeups of the head and arm (pic 4/5). Kirby’s unique chunky body style works great on this beast, with his squared of fingers and facial proportions actually making perfect sense! We also get a pretty great profile shot of Etrigan (pic 3) himself, which I feel is one of Jack’s most uniquely designed leading men! 💥💥💥 Even though Kirby opened the issue with a full page splash he is far from some of utilizing the big page layout to convey his stylistic choices. Besides the opening splash and the double splash we are looking at here, this issue features another 3 splash pages... that’s just about 1/3 of all the pages of the total issue!
