Almost a year after I posted the first pages of July in the Back of Your Throat things are FINALLY starting to get hot and heavy between Steve and Eddie as I work on page 11 🔥🔥🔥
Making a long comic is a slow process, but it’s so worth it if you have the patience! 🖤 It’s also really fun to see how much my art style has changed and evolved over the past year.
While there are some things that bother me about the Young Sherlock plot, a few ends I feel they didn't tie up, or I just didn't really understand, they did an amazing job with the character development - James' first and foremost.
Sherlock doesn't really change, he becomes a bit more disillusioned with the world, yes, he loses his innocence in a way, but he sticks to his moral code and core personality.
James, however, starts out with good intentions, and is slowly but inexorably drawn down a more sinister path, the core of his personality revealing itself - the greed, the contempt towards those who look down on him or who let themselfes be controlled, the fire and ambition to make something of himself but mostly make someone rich and powerful of himself, someone no longer in a position of weakness. He thanks Sherlock in the end for having taken him on these adevntures, because otherwise he would have stayed at Oxford and become a boring government clerk. All the things he experiences with and because of Sherlock make James face his inner demons - and realise that he likes them, and he has no compunction about working with them to achieve power and greatness.
It should really be called The Making of James Moriarty.

Q!Fit is coming home!!!
But there is still a cat shaped elephant in the room with blue and yellow eyes...
This will only mention Fit and Pac's relationship because Pac will probably play the biggest role in convincing everyone who the real Fit is.
Been looking at things here and on Twitter, so this is mostly me getting thoughts out
Onto my rambles XD
Madagio is using she/her just to help differentiate from Fit and Pac.
Now, I could be wrong, but I don't think Madagio knows 100% that Fit is coming back. She heard the portal sounds and Fit's camel husk but she may have not actually seen him. Not to mention the cinematic was for us the viewers as he was miles from the building at first. Makes sense if Madagio only has a limited view but if it is a fed building, I wonder what that means for Madagio's connection with the Feds... hmm... I don't trust that cat.
Also I believe Fit only mentioned the cinematic in pre-stream when talking to chat so it definitely wasn't in character.
I don't trust that cat and her claims of hating the Federation. Why get player data then if you want to take down the Feds? Why hasn't she done anything to get information? Why hasn't she encouraged methods of getting around the Feds?
(Personally I think it would be easy to retcon Pac never actually dying but instead Madagio created the grave in order to give Fit the push to leave the island as he may not have gone willingly if he believed Pac was still alive.)
Onto the potential aftermath of Fit's return;
I think it would be interesting if Fit does initially want to hear Madagio out (such as when he says he has something to give them) but that all changes when he finds out that Madagio has been kissing Pac. Why would Fit let Madagio live? If Madagio had just been pretending to be him that is one thing. But assaulting Pac? That is completely different.
I hope they give Fit the ability to use illegal items and such to show that he isn't under the control of the Federation.
Honestly, props to CC!Fit being willing to play a character that is a sexual assaulter. Because that is what and who Madagio is. Kissing someone who thinks who are another person is assault. Madagio may not be the best manipulator but it is the intent rather than the execution that matters.
Now...an ideal ending would be Madagio dying. Horribly. It wouldn't be happy for her but she doesn't deserve it. However, with Fit returning early I do worry about how satisfying it could be. Perhaps she runs off when it is revealed that she is impersonating Fit but...I don't know.
Maybe instead of dying right away she tries to go to the other Islanders but they don't trust her? Like she talked before about not getting attached and now she has and yet she winds up alone again. This time not because of the Federation but because of her own actions. She can only blame herself.
Realistically it would make sense to have Madagio alive a little longer cause she is an interesting character and we know next to nothing about her. She can change into a cat. She can change appearance with player data. She was able to get onto 2B2T and get Fit onto the island, somehow.
And that is all I can recall off the top of my head. Everything else we know is not confirmed on how she is tied to them. Like the cats from Vaccus Island? We don't know if she was a cat or one of those players or someone/something else entirely.
Anyway, my mind now is quiet I have wrote it. I do have to stop before my brain wants to add anything more. Must restrain myself as everything else is more incoherent than this.
[ spoilers for the realm of light quest line, from the first to the fifth quest. ]
[ disclaimer: this is all my brain's personal interpretation. it may be shit and dumb, and super disjointed, one thought after another after another, but it's mostly just to get my thoughts out lol. also i trust people will be chill regarding this, hopefully ]
anyways, everything is under the cut.
i'm really hoping that the ending of RoL V wasn't the end of lari's character, but considering the wiki says it's "up to player interpretation" if she dies or just loses connection is disappointing, to say the least. i'm really, really hoping that they have a quest where we rescue her, or something, as how it stands currently bummed me out. not in the way i felt seeing my favourite characters die, but in the way patchy the pirate felt when he got hyped just for the tape to be spongebob walk cycles. consider everything, for a moment, from RoL I - V. we see lari as how she "normally" is, then she slowly loses her mind due to her own saviour complex, and then in a moment of weakness tries to fight us before being let back into the realm of light. i feel like, until the fifth quest's conclusion, the quest line was great !! it showed us lari, her flaws, ( she's neurotic, stubborn, pathetic, loyal to a fault regarding her morals, has a saviour complex, and refuses to self-reflect ) the mistakes she's had until now, and felt like it was setting up for something great. who knows, maybe i'm being stupid and the current conclusion to the quest line is setting up for something, but the wiki leaves me kinda hopeless...
here's how i viewed it: lari, a somewhat tired and frustrated elf tries to do her best to keep the corruption at bay. one day, the player character asks for her help, and that's where we see one of her main flaws as a person ( note: as a person, not a character but a person in-universe ) she is stubborn to her pacifistic morals, and is shaken up greatly upon realizing she's taken the life of the grootslang.
second quest, we see lari even more frustrated as the light she has relied on is now ( essentially ) ghosting her. the times we see where she does try to reflect is through speaking with the light. when we, the player character, come along, it fucks up her view of herself because we're given the role she has worked hard to achieve and hold onto. she's been fighting the corruption for a while now, and partnered with her saviour complex i wouldn't be surprised if she was questioning her worth. while not in the 2nd quest itself, it seems like she has been questioning her worth Since the 2nd quest, as seen by the following dialogue taken from the wiki:
while i also understand the importance of the third quest, as it shows more of lari's history alongside dullahan, i think this quest works well in showing that lari is largely stagnant. she is not improving as a person in any substantial way, again: lack of self reflection. the biggest example of how she refuses to self-reflect is seen in dullahan. yes, lari is why dullahan is the way he is, and yes it is largely her fault he is in his current state, but not once does she reflect and think "what could i have done differently ?" it's possible she did at one point, but it's clear any effort she has made to prevent making the same mistake isn't major enough to note. perhaps killing the grootslang could count, but then again killing it wasn't her intention.
onto the fourth, perhaps my favourite quest regarding lari's character. ( sidenote, i'd consider the fifth to be up there had the ending not been... y'know. ) we are nearing the boiling point of her frustration. she's more unstable, she's barely keeping it together. when she is given one thing to do, retrieve the canned abis, the player character does it for her. this is the straw that breaks the camel's back, as she has a full-ass meltdown, attempting to kill the player character in a moment of weakness. then, she's rewarded for it. a moment of weakness, where she acts on impulsivity is where she is rewarded greatly. finally, we have a change in lari's character: she reflects on herself after the conversation with the guardian of the forest. she thinks why, despite all her efforts, did it take her this long and this close to killing someone was she rewarded. i think her improvement is best seen at the start of the fifth realm of light quest.
now, if the wynncraft team were to add more onto the story, then i wouldn't mind the abrupt way lari was written out, since her absence is ultimately temporary when everything is laid out. as it stands though, if this is how lari's character concludes, then i'm sawing my head off with a bonesaw
at the beginning of the quest, she apologizes to the player. she acknowledges what she has done to dullahan, an issue that she was seemingly running from and blocking out of her memory. she's more composed, and is even willing to forgo her pacifist morals for the light. she's even willing to go as far as trying to kill bak'al, fully prepared to take his life. and so, how does the story reward her ? her constant falls on her face before the player character comes along and assists her in finally trying to fix some of her flaws; she isn't neurotic, she self-reflected, she let go of her personal morals for the sake of the light, and she has ultimately improved from how we saw her in the previous quests... how is she rewarded ? by having her fate be up to the player's interpretation, not in this dimension any longer, just in one portal, a little goodbye note, and poof ! bye bye lari. i truly hope that they have plans for her in the future, truly truly, as this would be such a disservice to lari as a character. if anything, i would have been more pleased if she left the player alone after the monoliths were all fixed up, saying something along the lines of "glad i could help but i still have some things to fix up back in gavel. this time, though, it'll be different" and then she'll teleport out or something. it'd feel a bit more conclusive, at the very least.
this isn't to mention my slight disappointment with how we, the player, don't actually *see* her develop from RoL IV to RoL V, especially since it isn't clear whether she has or hasn't developed as much as it may seem. for all we know, she's just putting on an act ( actually, i think it'd be really fun to deconstruct her as she slowly loses face that leads into the *real* betterment arc, on-screen this time >:3< )
Watched Elemental thanks to Korean twt rallying behind it. Overall I enjoyed it, though it wasn’t without issues. Felt like it could’ve used some polishing. Thoughts with possible spoilers:
The Good:
- The romance was extremely cute! Kind of ironic, since the thing I was the least interested in for this film was the Romeo-Juliet story, but both characters became more endearing when they started to interact with each other which made me become invested in their relationship. It also helps that both characters were adult characters--as opposed to preteens or teens--that dealt with issues in a fairly realistic and relatable way.
- Related to the first point, I was super amused to find that this is by far the horniest Pixar movie to date. Good for them.
- The song “Steal the Show” is also really nice and refreshing. A+ choice
- Really pretty visuals, which is to be expected from a movie where the main characters are effects.
The Bad The Could-Use-Some-Polish:
- I think @amandaishighlypredictable really zeroed in on that a lot of the weak points of the film can be traced to the fact that unlike Zootopia, which had fleshed out the dynamic of the city pretty handily, Element City could’ve used some tighter establishing moments when Bernie and Cinder first arrived. We generally know that there’s some prejudice facing fire elements, but we don’t really know how the city is established or why fire elements decided to settle there. It would’ve also helped to get some groundwork of how the physics of the world work--Ember can touch Wade, but she can get hurt by normal not-alive water, and she burn plant elements but not enough to kill? This felt like a plot hole.
- I think the immigrant story was very ambitious and I both respect it for trying to tell that story and appreciate it for giving voice and visibility to the perspective of 2nd gen’rs. There was a lot in the film that felt specifically tailored towards the kids of immigrants, so much that I wondered if the film would resonate beyond 1st gen and 2nd gen viewers. And on that topic, sometimes I felt that the movie got to be a little too on the nose for what it was trying to do. Ember’s “the only way to repay that sacrifice is by sacrificing your own life” ...oof. It felt at once too personal but also incredibly inelegant to say that out loud. Surely show and not tell would’ve been a better way to deliver this message?
- I liked the journey of Ember learning how to carve out a place for herself despite appreciating her parents’ sacrifice, because that felt true, too. But it did feel a little like Wade was a manic-pixie-dream-boy? Other than a few microaggressions at the dinner table that he kind of defends her from, there’s never really a moment where Wade gets where Ember’s point of view is coming from. It would’ve been nice if he had a moment of recognition or something, because it did feel a little one-sided, though admittedly the film is largely from Ember’s POV.
Anyway, the takeaway is that I do recommend it, and I’m debating whether I want to see it again to see if I can sort through my own complicated feelings towards it.
Because I can't think of a question, here's a free invitation to ramble about Grayland's Shadow and what parts you're looking forward to writing!
hello and how are you?
Happy Storyteller Saturday, our dear Midnight! Thanks for stopping by, even if you didn't have a question or anything, it is still nice to see you!
And since you want a good ol' fashion ramble about Grayland's Shadow, then let's do some random facts and tidbits about the Story, considering the day and all! c:
We won't add the Tag List, only bc of the time, but this is a ramble and a long post, so fair warning now! (≧∇≦)/
Let's start off with random facts and thoughts!
For the most part, Grayland's Shadow is just as wonderful as all of our other stories: we adore it and love it and want to make it into a book, but we do find it fond and lovely just bc it was our first attempt at novelling! We even had it in our Google Docs as, "The Very Bad Attempt At Novelling" and we still hold onto that title, though it is much more fond now.
Grayland's Shadow was actually our very first attempt at NaNoWriMo, all the way back in 2015, and we kept at the story for some of the other Camps and NaNo's after, bc we really wanted to develop and create the story, even though it was very much flawed and disjointed and just pack filled with random scenes and tropes and things that we liked.
Our first draft was actually published on Lulu for a bit, just as it was, bc we honestly had no thoughts about editing and other things! We kind of just slapped the book together, threw it onto Lulu and copied what our sister did, who also did publish a book too on there, though hers was an actual one. o(≧∇≦o)
We kind of let the story sit for a long while, mostly bc we found it lacking as a story, and kind of got discouraged with it, bc it was so disjointed and kind of more of a mash up of words and ideas, that we just... buried it away and pretended it didn't exist for a long while.
But Grayland, as a character, did stick around! He is very much a vibrant character all by himself, and he weaved himself into such solidity that he became a very staple to the background of our World and Stories! And we found that, as we developed Grayland and his character, his story slowly came back into play and we could slowly change our view on it and how his story even goes and what we wanted from his book.
So this year, we decided to roll through the first draft, get it edited and torn apart and devoured in a different way, and make room for Draft Two! It might not be a Story we focus on for NaNoWriMo, but it is a story that we are more than ready to tackle.
Grayland's Shadow is so much more than just a random attempt we did while in highschool and trying to daydream about a writer; it is the story we want to publish with first. We want to show the Worlds that our Stories are something that can handle the tests of time. And we never really ever wanted to leave Grayland's Shadow at an attempt.
Also, a lot of what Neil Gaiman thinks about stories and their aging and their productions and everything else, helped us with coming back to Grayland. He waited almost ten years for his story to truly become what he knows it can be, and who are we to deny that? c:
And moving onto what parts we're looking forward to writing!
We think the most exciting bits of the Story that we are looking forward to writing are those starring Grayland! From his murders to his interactions with Mitch, to his attention to Molly, to his logical malice towards his own enemy, he has grown SO MUCH as a character, and we are so excited to write him as he is.
He isn't just the deranged and insane serial killer we had daydreamed about being more human than anyone wanted to believe. He is something more calculating, more logical, and much less stuck in Insanity than anyone would want such a monster to be, holding something that not even most could forgive, and giving forth a story that we think is so much more thrilling than just a murderer with a random change of heart.
