I was reading through some of my posted personal letters on this account, and I’m amazed at just how far I’ve come since my time actively using tumblr.

A few years ago, I was miserable in a dead end relationship, stuck with a man I didn’t love and refusing to leave out of guilt. I couldn’t see the full picture at the time — I thought all of the blame fell onto me, that it was my fault we never did anything exciting together, my fault that sex had lost any appeal. While I wasn’t wholly wrong, I wasn’t a monster like I felt I was. I just wasn’t in love.

And then I met another man, who started as an amazing friend and helped me to see that I could still have the fun and exciting life that I wanted, that I only had to make a choice. So I did, and I left my shitty ex and I blossomed. I was traveling every weekend, going to conventions I’d never heard of before and embarking of several hours of train journeys and exploring the whole of NYC. I was happy, and thriving, and so excited to see what the future held.

I lost a bit of steam, at the end of it all. The friend I’d made became something more and then became nothing at all. I was consumed, again, by grief.

But I don’t regret it.

Now, I’ve built myself up again in the manner I should have as a child, but couldn’t manage. I have a foundation of independence now, an acceptance of the natural loneliness of individuality, and the capability to invite others into my life without making them the central focus of my being. I’m back in school and doing fantastically well, I’m finally writing again and making progress on my book, I’m close to purchasing my first car and I’m still traveling when I can find the time and cash.

And best of all, I think I’ve found the person I’m going to spend the rest of my life with.

My only regret, when looking at these littler letters to myself? Knowing I couldn’t spend my Au Pair year in Russia.
