The general consensus was what I had thought: It's okay to dress up as a character, but it's not okay to lighten or darken your skin to dress up as a character.

Here's a small debate that happened in my family and I wanted to see how everyone felt about this.

Is it okay to dress as a particular person of color? And now, I don't mean like blackface or things that were done to make fun of people. I mean like a specific character or person. Obviously blackface or brownface is wrong when it makes fun of a person of color, but would you ever consider someone darkening their skin with makeup for the purposes of looking like a specific person of color to be racist?

Is it okay for someone to dress up as Gandhi, when the intention is not to dress as "an Indian guy" but Gandhi?

Is it okay for someone to dress up as Mulan, not to dress up like a Chinese woman, but because she's their favorite Disney character?

And likewise, I suppose, if it's okay (and it is) for someone to cosplay outside of their race or body type etc., does that work when a person wants to dress up as a famous person or figure who happens to be a person of color?

And I guess, ultimately, since intention behind dressing up as someone is what's important, if the intentions are innocent enough, is it wrong?

#ThisLove6thWin! We are all happy about this. It's to a point where I feel like if they are nominated, they will win. Changjos sure are great. No wait. Musn't take the wins for granted! Keep working hard for our oppadeul!
