So recently I have been reading a lot of medical studies for my fanfics and my own stories. I have also been binge watching 9-1-1 for the past couple of weeks with breaks here and there and I just started season 6. My favorite character is for sure Buck and so as a combination of hyperfixations I wrote this analysis. Hope you enjoy it!
If Buck was born from IVF, I would assume that the Buckley’s used Preimplantation Genetic Diagnosis or PGD for short. This means he was specifically selected as an embryo because his HLA (Human Leukocyte Antigen) markers were a perfect biological, 10/10, match for his dying older brother. From the moment he was born, his “biological purpose” was to be a living pharmacy.
This scenario is going to be for an AU. Let’s say buck had to have maybe 15 full surgical bone marrow harvests, the 15 is just a random number I thought of that could possibly be realistic. In a realistic medical setting, 15 full surgical bone marrow harvests (which take 1-2 quarts of marrow) would likely kill a child or leave them crippled. To make it work for a future firefighter, we're going to frame it as the “15” as a combination of procedures over that decade:
3 Major Harvests: These were the full surgeries under general anesthesia where doctors drilled into his hip bones to get enough marrow for the primary transplants.
12 “Top-Ups” (Donor Lymphocyte Infusions): Because maybe Daniel, his older brother, kept relapsing or the graft was failing, buck was brought back for “booster shots” of his white blood cells. These are still invasive needle procedures, but they are faster and less damaging to the bone than a full harvest.
The Result: By age 10, he had spent more time in a hospital than at his own home.
Since he’s also a firefighter, he has to be elite, but his body carries the “debt” of his childhood:
He could have deep, subcutaneous scarring on his posterior iliac crests (lower back/hips). To a fellow firefighter or a doctor, the skin looks slightly “pitted” or toughened.
Bone marrow is where blood is made. Because he was most likely really chronically anemic as a kid, he might still be sensitive to the cold. After a long shift in wet gear, his hips throb with a deep, “hollow” ache that he hides from his crew.
He likely over-trains his lower body. He carries the heaviest gear and never complains about pain because he was conditioned from birth to believe his body is a tool meant to be used for someone else’s survival.
Psychologically speaking Buck probably has a lot of problems and we have already seen a lot of them in the show regularly.
Hero Complex: He didn't choose to be a firefighter, he was born a savior. If he isn’t saving a life, he doesn’t know what his value is.
Sibling Bond: His relationship with his siblings is likely “golden but heavy.” Every time he looks at them, he sees the reason for his scars but he will always backtrack and he feels bad for thinking that because they’re also the people who raised him and made him feel loved when their parents wouldn’t. Every time his siblings, mostly Daniel, look at him, they feel a crushing debt.
I just realized something...and I don't know if others have realized this yet so I might be dumb but...
Rouge was pregnant for 20 months with Ace right? Well, 20 years later Ace dies.
This makes me so sad 😢

One time I was hanging out with one of my bestie's, let's call her angy, and I saw her dad and whispered:
Me: "Your dad looks like Mark Sloan"
Angy: "Huh, I can see it"
Angy: "Hey Dad, Alex thinks you look like Mark Sloan from Grey's Anatomy!"
Me: "Shuddup, Shuddup, Shudduppppp"
Her Dad: "huh?"
Her Step Mom: *Laughing* "Don't worry babe thats a good thing!" *continues to laugh*
And that's why I can't look at my bestie's Dad in the eyes again...
This is a real conversation I had with one of my best friends.
