our eyelids sag

heavy with sleep

and the wind tangles your hair

i worship the dawn

the smear of fire across the horizon

breathe in, you say

the sun knows us better than a thousand stars ever could

we are cigarette butts and coffee shops and fever dreams

the journey is over

and spring remains

my voice cracks

clouds darken the sky

with the promise of rain

and a whisper of thunder

tickles the back of her neck.

the wind tries to blow her away

and skirts billow around her,

red hair obscures her sight

and wraps around her hands

when she tries to tie it back.

still, she runs.

the gods may not want her to leave

but she is not who she was

and cares little

what the lord of the skies

wants from her,

cares little

about anything,

unless it’s the stake

and the blazing fire

that awaits her

if she’s caught.

they accused her of witchcraft,

of magic and manipulation,

and once it was said

what could she say or do

to prove them wrong?

you know what they say

about broken clocks.

still, she runs,

prays desperately to hecate

for guidance,

and disappears into the woods.

the ancient tree stretches upwards,

branches like fingers

grabbing for clouds.

once bare and spindly,

now a hurricane of color

and flowers.

it should not grow here—

a little too far south

to be possible

but ambition climbs up its roots

threads itself into the bark

and festers alongside the cherries,

deep red as wine and just as capable

of staining teeth

and reputation,

blots of ink

slowly consuming

a sheet of paper too thin

to stop them.

my tea’s gone cold

as it has for several mornings now—

i’ve begun making it

with the cherries that grow

outside my window,

large and dark and sweet-smelling

but i have yet to find the courage

to taste it.

the speaker you bought me struggles to keep up

i should have replaced it by now but

i just can’t bring myself to get rid of it.

i was supposed to recover from you years ago

and instead all i have to show for it

is more excuses

for why i can’t move on

why i can’t move at all.

why is it that the human species

is so stubborn to let go?

we just keep wishing for something eternal

and wait for it

but sometimes it never comes

and we are left in the dust, looking back

on the things we had

and didn’t hold on to tightly enough

until it was too late.
