I think you make a good point that Amy would not think of herself as having changed. I agree completely, I think in Amy's mind she's still exactly the same spunky and cute girl she always was. We as an audience can observe her change, and if a younger version of Amy met her older self she'd see her as bigger and better. But I don't think modern Amy recognizes these changes, and if she met her younger self she'd encourage her because she knows those traits are and always have been there and just need to be properly motivated.
I don't think Amy thinks of herself as better than she used to be. The only thing that's different for her now that she would be able to recognize as being a measured change is her relationship with Sonic. That's literally something she says in the (Japanese version of) Final Horizons Frontiers DLC, that she's not all about chasing after Sonic anymore. But that has nothing to do with HER changing HERSELF, it's just a recognition of how their interactions and chemistry have developed over the years.
That has nothing to do with her changing herself to try and vie for other people's approval. Amy doesn't CARE about other people's approval. If she knew someone else didn't accept her, she'd want to MAKE THEM accept her not want to change to be what they consider acceptable.
Amy has blossomed but she's always known who she is and been confident and proud of herself for being who she is.
Couldn't have said it better myself, randomfox.
My major issue with the comic itself is that it deliberately craps on what Modern Sonic said to his Classic self at the end of Sonic Generations. You know, the whole 'Enjoy your future! It's gonna be great!' Line that people needlessly mocked back in the day despite it being a good endpoint to the game?
I feel Amy herself would have the same sentiments to her Classic self about her future, but instead of going the same route, the comic writer/artist projected their (blatantly false) beliefs that Amy became 'subdued' over the years, and absolutely destroyed what would have been a sweet and touching scene that you can love your past self as well as your future self. It took me a bit to get the words I wanted to say, because I knew that I *hated* that comic when it was first released, and seeing how many people blindly thinking it was 'good' because it 'subverted expectations' just ABSOLUTELY FLOORED ME on how GULLIBLE and BLIND people were about Amy's characterization. I would have tore the comic a new asshole when it was first released BECAUSE it was such a toxic, backstabby 'commentary' on something that didn't exist in the games.
It honestly feels like I'M the only one who SEES Amy as who she is these days. And it SICKENS ME that people legit LET THIS OOC PIECE OF TRASH in as a 'thoughtful comic', when all it does is SHIT ON AMY FOR 'COMMENTARY' ABOUT SOMETHING THAT NEVER HAPPENED.
