Another late night at the agency had Ranpo coming home long after dark. The case itself had been solved almost immediately, thanks to his Super Deduction, but taking action had been more complicated than intended- not to mention the mountain of paperwork it created.
It was nearly ten o’clock by the time Ranpo finally made it home. He unlocked the front door and stepped inside. It looked like all the lights were out, meaning Poe had probably gone to bed, so Ranpo didn’t call out for fear of waking him. He set his keys on the table and closed the door.
On the way to the bedroom, he stopped by the kitchen to grab a snack. Just as he suspected, there were still a half dozen or so cookies that he and Poe had baked over the weekend. He happily stuffed a cookie in his mouth, then grabbed another as an afterthought.
As he turned around, he noticed the light in Poe’s study was still on. He curiously walked over and stood in the doorway. Poe was fast asleep, slumped over with his head on his desk. Loose papers were scattered around his head. Clearly he’d been struggling with it before he fell asleep.
It wasn’t unusual for Poe to stay up late into the night, working for hours to perfect his latest novel. Ranpo tried to discourage him from this habit, since it usually ended up making both of them miserable. But this time it seemed Poe’s body had made the decision for him. He looked so peaceful when he slept; the worried lines on his forehead smoothed out as he took calm, shallow breaths. Ranpo hated that he’d have to wake him, so he watched for a moment instead.
He set the cookie down on Poe’s empty lunch plate, then carefully eased the cloak off his sleeping form. Poe managed to sleep through that much, so Ranpo moved on to loosening his corset for him (he’d lectured him on the health risks of wearing a corset regularly, but Poe had brushed him off, insisting it was fashionable).
Ranpo brushed Poe’s hair aside and kissed his forehead. “Ed,” he said softly. “Wake up, sleepyhead.”
Poe stirred, opening his bleary eyes enough to focus on Ranpo. A soft smile fell across his face. “Oh, welcome home Ranpo.” He yawned and stretched, lifting his head from the desk. The lines from the wood grain and the folds of his sleeve left lines on his face. “Did I fall asleep?” he asked.
Ranpo bit back a grin. “Yeah, just thought I should get you to bed so you don’t have a sore neck tomorrow. It’s about ten, by the way.” Poe didn’t keep any clocks in his office, another thing that likely led to his habit of overworking himself.
“Ah, thank you,” Poe said. He stood up, looking surprised when his corset slid down to his hips.
“It’s probably not safe to sleep in that, you know,” Ranpo lectured. He picked up the cookie and took a bite out of it. “Restricts your breathing and whatnot,” he continued, his mouth full.
“I wasn’t exactly planning to fall asleep in it,” Poe laughed. He reached out and brushed a crumb away from the corner of Ranpo’s mouth. “Thank you for loosening it for me.”
Ranpo swallowed, eyes flicking to Poe’s lips. He was never one to struggle with asking for what he wanted, but this time Poe beat him to the punch. He leaned down and gently pressed his lips to Ranpo’s, smiling into the kiss.
When Ranpo felt Poe’s lips curl into a smile against his, he laughed. “What?” he asked, giggling as Poe kissed him again.
“Just thinking about how lucky I am,” Poe murmured.
“Lucky?” Ranpo asked, impatiently tugging him to the bedroom.
“Yeah.” Even with his back turned, Ranpo could feel the look of fondness Poe gave him. “You take care of me and bring me back down when I get in my head and you brighten up my life. I don’t think I’ve ever felt as loved by someone as I feel I am by you.”
Ranpo grinned. “Not even Karl?” he teased, pointing at the gray ball of fur curled up at the top of the cat tree in their room.
Poe put a finger to his lips playfully as if to say don’t tell him.
Ranpo laughed again. He threw his arms around Poe’s waist and squeezed. “I love you, too,” he said, his voice muffled into Poe’s chest. Poe hugged him back, and the two stood there for a minute until they started to sway on their feet from sleepiness.
“Let’s get ready for bed,” Ranpo suggested. “You can bounce ideas for your novel off of me while we fall asleep, or we can do it in the morning if you’re too tired tonight.”
“Tomorrow morning sounds perfect,” Poe replied. “You always know just what I need.”
“Well I am the world’s best detective,” Ranpo said, nudging his side as a smile crept into his voice. “And right now, I can deduce we both need a good night’s sleep.”
Poe kissed the top of Ranpo’s head. “You’ve cracked it again,” he murmured fondly.

i hc poe with psychosis becouase i have it so here's some ranpoe fluff with this <3
I really want to write a Ranpoe Au, which one should I write?
Zombie apocalypse
---
Soulmates
---
Figure skater Poe/professional e-sports gamer Ranpo
---
Baker Poe/customer Ranpo
---
Ranpo is a famous detective and Poe just needs a room but gets dragged into being his assistant (basically a Sherlock Holmes au) OR Ranpo is still a detective but hires Poe to be his assistant.
---
Stuck in a storm together Au, but with my own twist (even though it's probably not that original, T-T)
Ranpo is working on a case that leads him to the remote woods to hunt for a body, nobody else can go with him because they're all busy, he finds the body but then it starts snowing, not a light dusting but a full-on blizzard. The only shelter for kilometers is a magnificent Victorian-looking mansion. Ranpo thinks it's deserted and breaks in, only to find someone does inhabit it after all, an author who prefers to hide away from the world. Speaking of hidden things Ranpo, because he's well . . . Ranpo has brought the body along with him (he can't let the evidence be destroyed in the weather) Poe is very confused but being the kind soul he is lets this strange corpse bearing detective inside (it could be an inspiration for a new novel) and agrees, much to Ranpo's surprise, to store the body in his basement, since it's cold but shielded from the weather. After this is done, however . . . they're alone with no company but themselves.
(A/N: these will probably be one-shots but if I wrote the apocalypse one it would probably be a bit longer. Pls tell me in the replies which one I should do because I have so many drafts and I can't decide.)
