Spin-It: Optimizing Moment of Inertia for Spinnable Objects

Spinning tops and yo-yos have long fascinated cultures around the world with their unexpected, graceful motions that seemingly elude gravity. We present an algorithm to generate designs for spinning objects by optimizing rotational dynamics properties. As input, the user provides a solid 3D model and a desired axis of rotation. Our approach then modifies the mass distribution such that the principal directions of the moment of inertia align with the target rotation frame. We augment the model by creating voids inside its volume, with interior fill represented by an adaptive multi-resolution voxelization. The discrete voxel fill values are optimized using a continuous, nonlinear formulation. Further, we optimize for rotational stability by maximizing the dominant principal moment. We extend our technique to incorporate deformation and multiple materials for cases where internal voids alone are insufficient. Our method is well-suited for a variety of 3D printed models, ranging from characters to abstract shapes. We demonstrate tops and yo-yos that spin surprisingly stably despite their asymmetric appearance.

I love this kind of work, it's a great blend of technical and artistic inspiration, and Kathie is wonderful to work with.
Scribe's stackable whale from drawing to resin casts. You can see how the rough sculpt is laid out initially and then rebuilt to be super-crispy. It's that second crispy sculpt that gets rapid-prototyped. Then silicone molds are made and, in this case, a bunch of test colors produced in resin.
A sculpt I put together for Andrew Bell. Made it's toothy debut at SDCC, but I don't think he ever produced it. Too bad, I liked it a lot.

Microscale 3D Printing of a Spaceship
This video shows a realtime recording of the 3D micro printing process by two-photon polymerization. We start with the CAD model of a Hellcat spaceship from Wing Commander Saga and use our 3D printer Photonic Professional GT to print a polymer model on the microscale. The final structure is then inspected with a scanning electron microscope (SEM). Overall printing time was less than 50 seconds for the ship with dimensions 125µm x 81µm x 26.8µm (l x w x h). The length of the spaceship is approximately equal to the diameter of a human hair.
Stratasys - 3D Printed Magic Arms
When Emma was 2, she wanted to play with blocks. But arthrogryposis meant she couldn't lift her arms. So researchers at a Delaware hospital 3D printed a custom assistive device that lets Emma color, hug and play. The 3D printed WREX is durable enough for everyday use, so Emma wears it at home, at preschool, and during occupational therapy. She calls them her "magic arms." And the design flexibility of 3D printing lets researchers continually improve upon the device — they've now made custom WREX arms for at least 15 kids.
