By 1980, everyone was waiting for Hip Hop to fail. They thought Rapper’s Delight was a fluke. But a young kid from Harlem named Kurtis Blow had other plans.

The Historic Record: "The Breaks" wasn't just a hit; it was a phenomenon. It became the first rap song to sell over 500,000 copies (Gold status). It taught the world the "8-bar" structure that dominated radio for a decade.

The Major Label Leap: Kurtis was the first rapper to ever be signed to a major label (Mercury). Before him, rappers were on small, independent "street" labels. He broke the glass ceiling.

The Look: With the leather suits and the gold chains, Kurtis Blow created the visual aesthetic of the rap star. He was the first one to show that an MC could be a sex symbol and a household name.
