Sirius and Remus come out of the bathroom, dripping water everywhere and being very touchy-feely. James never complained about them, even the time he shuddered, not wanting the image of Sirius's bare arse to fill his head again. Too late.
Remus and Sirius changed for bed, and Sirius tucked Remus in, murmuring something into his ear and kissing him before drawing the curtains. Sirius skipped across the room and plonked himself in front of James on his bed.
“Prongs, can we have a chat?” He asked. James nodded and dragged the curtains around his bed closed. Sirius cast a silencing charm, and they were eleven years old again, whispering about pranks they wanted to pull and swapping chocolate frog cards.
“What’s up, Pads?” James asked cautiously. It had to be about Regulus. Since Sirius had found out about him, most of their conversations ended up with Regulus as the subject.
Sirius squirmed uncomfortably. Another new thing in their relationship. There had been a time when Sirius would blurt everything in his head out to James. By now, there was a division in their friendship. Sirius told Remus things he would have only told to James, and James kept things like his relationship with Regulus from him. He hated it so much. Sirius was a brother to him, and he’d foolishly thought that that naive little eleven-year-old had been right, that he and Sirius would always be the best of friends. Maybe they could. Maybe James was just being pessimistic. Pessimistic? Merlin, Regulus must be rubbing off on him.
“This thing with my brother, it is real, right? It’s not just some prank you two came up with?
“What? No, Pads, it’s real, I swear. I lo—” James snapped his mouth shut and Sirius’s eyes bugged out of his head as he took in James’s reddening face.
“You what?!” Sirius choked out.
“Shut up,” James groaned as he hid his face in his hands.
“Aww, Prongs,” Sirius sighed, pushing James’s hands aside before clambering into his lap. “I’m not going to pretend the thought of you and my brother together doesn’t give me nightmares, but if he had to pick anyone, I’m glad it’s you. I know you’ll look after him.”
“Thanks, Pads,” James hugged his best friend tightly and Sirius snuggled in tighter. They were going to be fine. Sirius was his best friend no matter what.
The curtains were suddenly wrenched open and Sirius disappeared from his lap. “Hi, love,” James didn’t need to be able to see him to know it was Regulus. Regulus threw the cloak off himself and took Sirius’s seat.
“Why do our common rooms have to be so far apart? I swear if I have to walk between them any more my calves are going to be enormous.” James chuckled and held him close, breathing him in and relishing how happy he felt right at that very moment.
“Are you ready for bed, love?” He asked, nuzzling his nose into Regulus’s hair. Regulus leant away from him and traced a finger up and down James’s chest.
“No,” He said innocently, before pushing James down onto the pillows.
