[TW: Animal death]
So last night I got home super late, everyone in the house was asleep when I walked in the door, nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Then I noticed a rat curled up in the middle of the kitchen floor.
Didn't look like it was doing too well so I found a cardboard box and a towel and heated up my hot water bottle and put it in the box with said items, along with water and a little dry kibble. It snuggled right into the hot water bottle and curled up, passed away at some point during the night.
I was thinking that it was sad that I couldn't have done more until my brother started laughing at me because apparently, he had set out rat poison after seeing it running through the kitchen yesterday. I understand the need to keep a clean cooking environment, but I feel like poison wasn't the right answer.
Still processing this, but I think I'm going to look for more humane pest solutions. I'm trying not to think too hard about how it must have suffered so that I don't have a breakdown.
