N.2 Engines

Often songs will inspire a music video in my brain, and this song is so amazing and different from anything I’ve ever heard. I immediately put it on in my head that just started with me. Foolish Fish by Droeloe is the song that inspired my second of 5 pieces highlighting the top five songs of the year.

In hearing this song, my mind had the singer staying at the center and stationary as they are being tested and fitted for a spaceship, with one of the scenes, right as the singer says “jump in the sea…” with the singer in the middle of two rocket engines igniting in time with the bass. It’s an image that has been stuck with me since I first heard the song.

Originally, my plan for this was to have the subject at the center with the engines angled at a perspective that would shoot around them, but… perspective is hard, and I could not get it right. As for the engines, I wanted them to have exhaust stylized like blowing hair or whatever the material they use for pompoms are, but ran out of time. I think one day I may come back and do this, but everything else was just about right for what I had in mind.

So let's start with this image: a villain with a red handprint covering their face, otherwise wearing pretty plain clothes

I was curious as to what this character represented in the comics, so I did a little digging. I found this article which introduced me to the Flag Smashers. Sounded sketchy so I kept looking into it.

This bit from a marvel wiki confirmed my fears. We're aligning Nazism with anti-patriotism. This villain represents someone critical of the United States. Apparently the Flag Smasher has an alter ego named Captain Anarchy but I didn't look into it.

In a time of social unrest, protests and riots against the state, Marvel has essentially aligned themselves with nationalism. Now back to the red hand. This is what initially made me uncomfortable.

The red hand wasn't apart of the Flag Smashers original design, this is new. All while pushing a nationalist narrative, Marvel has appropriated an indigenous symbol of resistance. This isn't an accident. They're siphoning power away from a movement that addresses colonial violence, they're portraying those that criticize the settler state as "flag smashers", villains as dangerous as Nazis. If you're not patriotic, if you're not loyal to the oppressive state, you're against Captain America. And no it's not racist because Captain America is black now. Kinda like how there's an overrepresentation of black actors in police roles. This is propaganda.

there was a great study a few years that went into the whole "ppl online are bigger jerks than irl cuz theres a virtual wall and no repercussions" and the researchers were expecting to see that be the case but it turns out that people who were really angry or argumentative online were also found to just be assholes in person and people who were pretty patient and nice online were found to be patient and nice in real person as well

and it just debunked that whole cynical idea that people will naturally be mean if theres no punishment for it

For people who forget: the whole thing of being transgender is that you identify with a gender that isn’t your sex/what you were born as. Because no one is assigned nonbinary at birth, being nonbinary is inherently transgender because you’re not cis about it.
