Rational brain : Oh good, soy sauce in a plastic bottle that won't smash on the floor if I accidentally drop it.
Monkey brain : hehe chug
Rational Brain: I’ll take notes on my laptop so I don’t lose them like I would if they were on paper
Dumbass (Genius, gay) brain: cool cool cool but how bout you look at pictures of Captain Marvel instead of paying attention to your lesson
Rational Brain: Yeah that sounds about right
Anxious brain: omg....anxious!!! Something will happen!!!!! Soon!!!! Freak out!!!!!
Rational brain: Don’t worry. Everything is going to be okay.
Anxious brain: ok
Anxious brain:
Anxious brain: but what if NOT OKAY??
The thoughtful skeptic opened in fine form as he decisively seized on the decision by Facebook and Apple to remove InfoWars from their news feeds as “another example of free speech being censored,” but visibly began to struggle after coming across an InfoWars article about how Queen Elizabeth II was an ageless vampire from Mars.
My Brain is Working Against Itself
I’m having issues with my brain at the moment. I mean, I always have issues with my brain - brain fog, confusion, anxiety, et al, but recently it seems to be maliciously working against me. Two recent examples:
I’m out doing food shopping on my own (a challenging activity at the best of times), and I need to buy some bread for OH. Idiot brain: Let’s get this one! We don’t usually get this one, it looks different, let’s get it! Rational brain: I don’t know, I’m sure that’s the type that OH doesn’t like. We’d better just get this other one, we know he likes that. Idiot brain: No. We’re getting this one. I’m in charge here. OH (next day): Can you get different bread next time? I don’t like that one.
I’m online, booking a blood test. This isn’t as straight-forward as it sounds as I need to either get a taxi to the surgery at great expense, or ask my neighbour for a lift, so I need to work out when she might be free. Idiot brain: Let’s book this one on Friday so we can get it over and done with. Rational brain: But we’re going away for the weekend on friday, there will be lots to do. It would be better to book it for one day next week. Idiot brain: I don’t give a shit, I’m booking it anyway. There it’s done and you can’t change it.
So yeah, these are small things but they serve to make life more difficult and annoying. Because of incidents like this I spend a lot of time second-guessing myself, trying to work out if idiot-brain or rational-brain is in charge and whether I’m making a stupid mistake. This often leads to doing nothing at all, rather than doing something that might be wrong. It also leads to a lot of time spent going over things and wishing I could have done them differently, which is not a healthy passtime. How do I stop idiot-brain from taking over and learn to trust myself again? I’m still working on that but I’ll let you know if I come up with an answer.
