Okay, that last incorrect quote with Wash Buckler and Rattle Shake has me curious about Rattle's backstory. What convinced him to join the Skylanders in your au?
After Rattle Shake died, he woke up in hell. This made him realize that death wasn't permanent, and that he had wasted his life being evil for no reason.
You see, snake's teach their young ones that if a Reaper doesn't bring their soul to the underworld, death is permanent, and Reapers refuse to take the snake's souls to the afterlife. So, Rattle Shake(who Went by Wrangler at the time)did whatever he could to avoid death; preform assassinations to earn money, offered his own body in exchange for his life when hits went south, even joined Strykore and became one of his skylanders to prolong his life;
That is, until Wrangler's son, Miguel, was killed right in front of him. Strykore said it was because Wrangler's love for Miguel made him weak. Wrangler was emotionally destroyed, and no longer wished to live. This caused him to kill himself.
When Wrangler fully processed the fact that he technically survived death-even if it was as a demon-he decided that this was his second chance at life, and spent the next century trying to become a better person, which is not an easy task in a world where Lawful Neutral is the best you can hope to find in people.

One day, Wrangler had a very difficult argument with his parents(who were also sent to hell when they died), where he explained that he wasn't trying to change his ways because he thought it could earn him a ticket out of hell, but because he had always wanted to be a good person, but chose not to be because he had been afraid of death. When his mom yelled that if he died as a demon, he wouldn't be able to come back again, Wrangler screamed that he didn't care, he wasn't going to ruin his second life like he did the first, he was going to be the man he wanted to be, not the coward who feared death.
When he woke up the next day, he was back in Skylands, with no idea of how he got there.
About two years later, he was a famous bounty hero and tracker, capable of locating anyone and anything, but nobody knew his name. Then, his canon backstory happened, and Eon sent Wash Buckler and a few other skylanders to recruit him.

When the other skylanders saw him, they recognized him as Wrangler and attacked, but Wash Buckler intervened. Wrangler, who had been blasted with the Magic element and driven to a panic attack, restrained him out of fear, and while Wash almost managed to calm him down, he tore out his left cochlea.
Surprisingly, the taste of Wash Buckler's blood is what brought Wrangler back to his senses. He and Wash Buckler had known each other while Wrangler worked for Strykore, in fact, Wash Buckler had wanted nothing more than to help the snake, and Wrangler actually respected the mermasquid and treated him like a worthy opponent.
Maybe the two of them had a deeper connection than even they realized.
"W..wash Buckler?"
"Y-yeah?"
"Why...your alive? How?"
"Uhh..technically I died a year before I joined the skylanders."
"Oh...I..i'm sorry about your ear, I was-"
"S'kay, it'll grow back. I know you have a really strong fight-or-flight response."
"A..a what now?"
"I'll tell you back at the academy."
"Oh..am I getting arrested?"
"Well, you were supposed to be getting recruited, but when we realized who you were the cadets attacked."
"Well, now that you know who I am, why would you want me to join you?"
"Well in my case, I've always wanted to get you away from Strykore, but as for everyone else...If you've really broken away from him somehow, I think I can work something out!"
"Why are you so insistent on giving me another chance?"
"I can see the good in you Wrangler, and I'm not letting it fizzle out. Especially when I know you want to let it out."
"....Don't call me that anymore. If you want me to join you I want a new name."
"Sure bud, whatever you want."
Eventually, Wrangler became the Skylander known as Rattle Shake. He's happy now, even if he wishes he could have saved his son and joined the skylanders sooner.

During my fic, "What happens when you don't tell your best friend you're in a relationship until your getting married?", Rattle Shake, Spitfire, and Spyro are on the other side of a portal to hell when it collapses.
All three skylanders are presumed dead, which throws Wash Buckler into a state of deep misery and grief because Rattle Shake is his husband.
This is what causes him to go in and out of his dark form.
