What kind of complicated Rube Goldberg-ass divorces were people getting back in the day? I realize divorce back then might not have had the same general implication of acrimony it does today but this daf read like a set of instructions for increasingly elaborate cruelties on the part of the husband.

It says something about the ongoing Jewish relationship to the divine that Moses had a message FROM GOD ordering him back to Egypt, arguably a lot more important than the guys who were after him dying, but that wasn't sufficient in itself to allow Moses to dissolve his vow.

Thursday 10/21, Rosh Hashanah 12: In Hot Water Now
Man I thought Noah’s Ark was a dark story to theme so much children’s decor around before, and now I learn the water wasn’t just flooding it was also boiling. I’m trying to decide which is better, straight drowning after hours or death immediately by boiling, but boiling is such a terrible death I think I’d rather drown.
Wednesday 11/24, Taanit 12: Live Fast Die Hungry
Rabbi Yohanan may have stared a man to death at one point but I have to say I am absolutely tickled by his solution to the “I don’t want to go out to dinner tonight” problem.
Can’t come to dinner, I’m fasting. In my home. With a pizza.
Also the irony of reading the tractate upon fasting during the Thanksgiving season is just now becoming evident to me. Good timing, Talmud. The diaspora salutes you.
