In 2007, Sophie Lancaster and her boyfriend Robert Maltby were walking through Stubbylee Park in Bacup, Rossendale. They both dressed alternative, with dyed hair, piercings and lots of eyeliner, and were no strangers to horrible words being hauled their way.
They were 20 and 21 when a group of teenagers attacked them in that very park, leaving them for dead. It was a crime committed simply because of the way Sophie and Robert dressed.
Sophie spent 13 days in hospital fighting for her life whilst in a coma, but didn't show any signs of waking up. On the 24th of August, her parents decided to terminate her life support.
The story of Sophie Lancaster was everywhere, determined as a hate crime. The boys who did it were proud of what they had done and laughed about it to their friends. They were sentenced to life in prison, though will be released round about now.
The community was devistated, finally coming to recognise how threatened people were simply for dressing however they wanted; for being themselves. Tributes flooded in from all areas of the world, but Sophie's mother wanted change.
The Sophie Lancaster Foundation was established by her mother, Sylvia, in her memory. Workshops in local schools were set up to talk about predjudice and challenge it, hoping to raise awareness and prevent such a crime before it started. She travelled around prisons, talking with inmates about violence and the devistating impacts it has on families as well as victims.
I have attatched a link to the foundation below, so please check it out if you can, and keep Sophie in your thoughts today alongside those others that have been victims of predjudice of any form.
The Sophie Lancaster Foundation combats prejudice and Hate Crime through education. Learn about Sophie's story, our work, and how you can he
(I tagged this for Dan and Phil because this happened very close to Phil's highschool and was in the area he grew up in. Beyond that, I know alot of Phans are Emo/Alt and maybe wish to discuss similar experiences in the comments. This is a safe space and you are not alone.)
