Did anyone laugh at Justin Cook's attempt to sound like a child when Raditz opened his mouth in the theater you watched DBS Broly in? Because it happened in mine. (I'll admit I laughed too I didn't know what to expect for him in the dub) I heard it was the same for other friends who saw the movie because it was so jarring to hear that kind of voice coming outta that child. Also any favorites among the newer characters introduced?
I was watching TFS’s review of the movie, and they poked some fun at Justin Cook, but honestly I didn’t notice anything out of the ordinary when Kid Raditz spoke. [SPOILERS: Planet Vegeta exploded and Raditz wasn’t on it.]
Honestly, I was hoping it would be Justin Cook and Chris Sabat portraying kid Raditz and Vegeta, and I was listening to make sure they hadn’t recast the roles. I was so glad to hear Cook that I didn’t really pay much attention to whether he sounded like a kid, but I thought it was fine. Considering how Kid Vegeta sounded in the dub of the Bardock TV special, I think both guys sounded a lot more like children.
Maybe other people in the audience reacted differently, but I couldn’t tell. Actually, as I recall, there were a lot of people rummaging around during the prologue scenes of the movie, like they couldn’t find their seats or something. I had a little trouble myself, but I got there before the movie started, so I don’t know why everyone else couldn’t sort that out. Also, the theater wasn’t sold out, and my whole row looked empty, so they could have sat anywhere they wanted.
As far as new characters, let’s put that behind a cut.
Paragus: I liked the original Paragus a little better than this new version, but they’re similar enough that it’s not a big deal. I’m not wild about how they lightened his skin tone in this movie, but I do appreciate how he’s gone grey. This is the first real evidence of how Saiyans age, unless you count Nappa’s hair loss over the years.
2018 Paragus isn’t as maniacal or as insidious as 1993 Paragus, but I do like how this movie crystallized his relationship to Broly. He accused King Vegeta of being jealous, and only sending Broly away because he couldn’t stand the idea of Paragus’ son being stronger than anyone in the royal line. I think this was implied in Movie 8, but Team Four Star’s panel acted like this was some new development. I mean duh. Prince Vegeta was resentful of that commoner Goku for upstaging him, so naturally baby Broly would upset King Vegeta.
However, Paragus kind of falls into the same trap as King Vegeta. Past a point, is he trying to help Broly for Broly’s sake, or to puff up his own pride? Without Broly, Paragus is nothing, and when he learns that Broly really is too dangerous for this sort of thing, his whole worldview collapses. This makes it especially fitting when Frieza kills Paragus to get Broly even more fired up. At that point, Paragus is a liability to everyone involved. But Broly still misses the old man.
The female (?) Saiyan in the nursery scene: I assume this character was a Saiyan scientist, since they didn’t show any non-Saiyans on the planet, the way they did with the Bardock TV Special. It goes to show that there’s a little more to them than what little we’ve seen of the Saiyan species thus far.
It also bears out that the Saiyans have had a long tradition of testing their young for battle potential. King Vegeta wasn’t just upset to see a mere colonel’s son in the elite nursery. He demanded an explanation for it, since everything he knows about Saiyan breeding practices says that it should be impossible for Paragus to have a kid stronger than his. I think it’s reasonable to conclude that King Vegeta didn’t just shoot Broly into space out of jealousy. He also did it for the same reason he shot Tarble into space. If his children are weak and Paragus’s children are strong, it threatens his political control on the planet. He needs scientists he can trust to tell him when these unusual births come along.
Cheelai: Pretty cool lady. I sort of envisioned her as a more loyal soldier, constantly referring to Frieza as “the chief” and being a fun, enthusiastic character in spite of working for the bad guy. But what I got was great too. Cheelai only joined the Frieza Force to protect herself from the Galactic Patrol. It says a lot about Frieza’s organization that he’d take on desperate aliens like her. In the old days, warriors joined up with Frieza because it was better to work for him than against him. Now, we’re seeing weaklings like Cheelai signing up for protection, and Frieza has to take them on because he needs all the help he can get.
So what Frieza’s ended up with is an army of Colonel Violets. They’re capable to an extent, but their loyalty to Frieza is tenuous at best. Cheelai in particular is clearly a creature of impulse. She probably stole that GP vehicle without any thought to the consequences, then she enlisted in the Frieza Force to solve that problem. She stole Paragus’s controller out of sympathy towards Broly, never considering what trouble that might cause later. Then she stole the Dragon Balls from Frieza without worrying about what might happen next.
Lemo: I didn’t really think too much about him when I saw the preview images, but he turned out to be a pretty cool guy. I like the idea that someone like him was there all the way back in the days before Frieza succeeded King Cold. He’s a logistics guy, not a warrior, but he’s seen the rise and fall and rise and fall and rise of Frieza, if only from a distance. He makes a good counterbalance to Cheelai.
Berryblue: She’s been around for a long time as well, except she was actually close enough to Frieza that she ended up right back at his side when he came back after the Tournament of Power. She also speaks much more freely around Frieza, which is nice to see. There’s a lot about the character we don’t know, but I like that Frieza has a sidekick like this. He probably could have used one in the Namek Saga, but it makes sense that he wouldn’t have brought her along on a mission like that. Mostly, it’s just nice knowing that he had that sort of attendant working for him.
Kikono: This guy was in Dragon Ball Minus, so I wasn’t too surprised to see him in the movie. I guess he’s the one who invented all of Freiza’s tech? I’d like to know more about the guy, since he didn’t do a whole lot in the movie, and he didn’t show a lot of personality, like Berryblue.
I think that’s all the new characters I can remember that I found notable. That Beets guy Paragus shot was kind of there. TFS was kind of into him because he proves that there were Saiyans weak enough to need sidearms, but I didn’t find it all that surprising.
12, 19, and 21 for the salty meme :3 and obviously for DBZ
Salty Ask Meme
12. Is there an unpopular arc that you like that the fandom doesn’t? Why?
I guess you could say the Garlic Jr saga (explained here). Though before answering these meme questions, I never would’ve said I liked it. However, this was the closest thing DBZ ever gave us to zombies/vampires and I really can’t turn my nose up at that.
Oh. And the Buu saga. Apparently it’s unpopular? I can’t imagine why.
19. What is the one thing you hate most about your fandom?
The amount of people who take the TFS parody seriously and judge characters based on memes. It’s one thing to make a joke, it’s another thing to express hatred towards characters because of those jokes which have nothing to do with the actual character.
21. What are your thoughts on crack ships?
LOVE ‘em. As a matter of fact, one DBZ fic I wrote was inspired purely by the idea of exploring crack ships. It all ended with canon pairings eventually, but started with hints of Goku/Bulma, Vegeta/18, Chi-Chi/mystery guy, Krillin/Maron, Launch/Tien, Raditz/Maron, and even Piccolo/Tien in there.
Thumbnails of Comic book Pages I’ve been working on in my Comics Experience Online Class. Pretty excited about my three page start for the class final. :3
Have some lovely and also hot and cute Hsien-ko gifs. Hope you enjoy them. Shes a very unique character and special to me. My favorite vampire character that I picked up after playing Felcia when I was a kid and to this day she still is an amazing character with such a great story too.
@nessawolfgirl @jurassicreptile @lordraptor-the-deathrocker @raxceni
@raxceni Well, the question was "What's the inessential clause? "My close friend, who knew me very well, told me an important secret."" And I said "The "who knew me very well" because for one, it's your close friend so that should be the assumption and for two, you can take it out and the sentence would still be a complete sentence." So idk, you tell me. God I want to go back to school so bad.
