Dmitry hadn’t expected the angel. Sure, he already had three immortals on his squad, but none of them were there out of the goodness of their heart; Anhea and Pileon only stayed for Donovan’s serum, and Cain, the newest addition (if he could be considered part of the squad), obviously had some sort of ulterior motive for hanging around, even if the general hadn’t quite figured it out.

“Lab assistant, what’s with the shadow?”

Lane scowled. “My name is Lane. And the shadow is Raphael.”

Raphael inclined his head slightly in greeting, but otherwise remained silent. He hadn’t said a word since the arrival of the squad – consisting of himself, Anna, Greg, Lester, Noah, Kira, and Amir, plus the trio of immortals – despite the rather obvious stares levelled at him.

“Don’t bother,” General Lloyd said. “The two are inseparable.”

That much was obvious. Dmitry was more interested in the why. He wasn’t the only one.

“Why are you serving a human?” Pileon blurted out. “You’re clearly powerful…”

Surprisingly, Raphael responded, “The Book is a powerful artifact. It, and the one who can decipher it, must be protected if humanity is to have a chance at survival.”

For a moment, his gaze lingered on Cain. The other angel didn’t back down.

“And heaven sent you?”

The strange pair spoke simultaneously:

“I’m here of my own will.”

“He’s here as a favour to a friend.”

“...Interesting friends you have, lab assistant.”

Lane didn’t bother responding this time. “I’m going to go work on the Book,” she told General Lloyd, and abruptly left.

Raphael followed a few paces behind.

Dmitry waited for his father to bark that he hadn’t dismissed her, but he only sighed wearily. Noticing Dmitry’s interest, General Lloyd provided a stark warning, “Best you stay away from that one.”

He rubbed at a faint scar on his neck - marks where something or someone had clawed him. The space between the gouges perfectly matched the width of Lane’s fingers.

Dmitry and Anna exchanged glances. His sister had noticed the marks, too.

Anna waited until there was a door between them and the rest of the squad to ask, “Did she do that?”

“I deserved it.” The answer surprised the siblings. It was unlike their father to admit fault in anything - he saw it as a weakness. Reading the looks on their faces, he briefly explained. “Do you remember the night I sent Donovan to Oxford?”

“Yes. You were worried about the blowback from your decision not to send aid after the tsunami that hit the east coast."

“Lane heard me make the call."

“Her family lived there,” Dmitry guessed.

“I don’t regret my decision not to send aid. We wouldn’t have made it in time. But she was right about one thing - I could have given them a warning, given a chance for some people to escape...” He shook his head. “Well, I guess it doesn’t matter now.”

Despite his words, he still looked lost in old memories. Dmitry and Anna made a silent decision to leave him be, reconvening in the corridor, where the others waited.

“Any information on our mysterious duo?” Cain asked, an edge to his voice.

“No.” Dmitry folded his arms. “Is there something we should know?”

Anhea and Pileon shared glances, communicating silently.

Anhea spoke reluctantly, “Raphael isn’t just any angel…”

“We figured that much out,” Noah said, annoyed.

The angel shook her head. “You don’t understand. Raphael was raised by Shepha himself, in Paradise. According to rumours, he was supposed to stop the Apocalypse.”

Different members of the team focused on different pieces of information.

“Shepha? The creator god?”

“Stop the Apocalypse as in end it, or stop it as in prevent it? Because if it’s the latter, he hasn’t done a great job…”

Everyone fell silent as Dmitry raised a hand.

“There’s no point speculating over rumours. We need more information.”

He turned to Anna, who rolled her eyes at the unspoken order. She slunk off in the direction the angel and cryptographer had disappeared. After asking around, she eventually located Lane’s room. The door was slightly ajar, allowing her to hear pieces of the conversation drifting out of the room.

“You aren’t seriously going to move in, are you?” Lane was saying.

“It’s for your safety.”

“You think the newbies have it out for me?”

“I don’t trust that angel. His energy was strange.”

Lane’s frustration was obvious. “You can’t do that from next door?”

“I’d rather not take any risks.” Then, he addressed the eavesdropper, “You can come in.”

Anna pushed the door fully open.

“Anna, right?”

She was taken aback. “Yes, how did you-?”

“General Llyod keeps a family photo in his desk,” Lane said. “What do you want?”

Anna appreciated her straightforwardness, and decided to return the favour. “Dmitry wanted information. And I don’t think it would be bad for us to become friends.”

A snort. “Of course.”

“I think it’s a good idea.” The angel’s statement made both women stare. “You don’t talk to anyone but me. It would be good for you to have human friends.”

“I have human friends.”

“Audrey doesn’t count.” Then, as if offering incentive, “If there were more people you trusted around, I wouldn’t have to follow you so closely…”

Lane went quiet as she contemplated the offer.

“So, Anna, what do you do?”

It turned out Raphael was right; the women had a lot in common, and quickly grew close. Still, Anna was surprised when a few days later, a knock at her door in the middle of the night revealed an anxious Lane, Raphael and an unfamiliar immortal lurking behind her.

“Lane? What’s going on?”

“Quick question: have you ever delivered a baby?”
