“How come you and Eragon never had children?” Vicky blurted out, then shrank back as she found herself on the receiving end of Rebecca’s hard stare. Her mother was radiating disapproval at her rather personal question, well aware of what had sparked it; Eragon’s interrogation of Malbonte was still fresh in both their minds.

Luciana remained blissfully unaware of what was going on behind her back, humming thoughtfully. “Children terrify me. They’re too fragile and unpredictable. Teenagers are easier to deal with.”

Even Rebecca couldn’t help but raise an eyebrow at that. “You think teenagers are predictable?”

“Of course. It’s always the same thing, isn’t it? Love, angst, identity crises, more angst…” She wasn’t wrong. “And teenagers never talk to their parents. I’m in the perfect position to offer some wise words, watch them ignore it, then sit back and enjoy the free entertainment with zero responsibility to intervene.”

Rebecca shook her head despairingly at the older seraph, likely wondering how this woman had survived for so long in a role that required such cold calculation and precision.

As if reading her mind, Luciana remarked, “Eragon is more than serious enough for the both of us.”

“How did you two end up together, anyway?” Vicky asked. “You’re so…different.”

“The same way you met Lucifer, and Rebecca met Winchesto. The Academy.” Luciana smiled, reminiscing.

She’d known of Eragon of course, who hadn’t? The only heir to the once great Empyrean. Many pitied him, but more hated him; his father and brother had paid for his survival with blood of those they were meant to protect. Those left orphaned – like Luciana – were all too aware of the heavy cost of his escape. But she saw no point in casting blame, and acknowledged him as just another element in the dreary backdrop of the Academy. Years passed like this, each of the angels floating in the other's orbit without really being pulled in. Then, halfway through their schooling, an assignment set the two on a path of collision.

“Eragon and Luciana, you’ll be up against…”

Luciana didn’t bother to catch the demons’ names, far more concerned with her ‘partner’. She didn’t harbor ill will toward him, but that didn’t mean she was deaf to the complaints (and in some cases, tears) of all those who’d been forced on missions with him before. But her fears were unfounded; thanks to Eragon’s scarily efficient work ethic, they completed their task with plenty of time to spare, and the angel surprised her by agreeing to her request to spend the rest of their allocated time exploring the human settlement they’d landed in.

“The king built this just for his wife,” Luciana told him, pausing to admire the terraced gardens.

Such a wonder was an amazing feat in and of itself, and only made more astonishing by the dry sands that surrounded the oasis. The engineering and irrigation was comparable to the highest echelons of Heaven; the name Gate of the Gods really did seem fitting. Hearing nothing but silence, she turned to see if her partner was still there, or if he’d finally gotten bored of her and left. His quick reflexes stopped them from crashing into one another, but didn’t spare the objects in his hands, the figs scattering across the ground.

“Oh!”

Using her tunic as a makeshift basket, Luciana hastily gathered the fruits.

“Leave them, there are plenty more–”

“Don’t be ridiculous.” She awkwardly carried the bundle to a spring of water, then began carefully washing the small fruits. “It takes a lot of effort for things to grow in the desert. We shouldn’t take it for granted.”

Luciana tried to hand the figs back to Eragon, but he stopped her midway.

“I picked them for both of us.”

“Oh, well…”

She accepted half of the bounty, sitting in the shade provided by the pergola. After a moment, Eragon joined her.

“What else do you know about the humans here?”

Luciana readily launched into the history of the region, regaling him with myths and legends. It was the beginning of a ritual: Eragon would find the local delicacies and Luciana would entertain them with stories while they enjoyed them. The tradition would persist over the centuries to come, far beyond the city where it originated, even as their relationship changed. But for now, the angels simply enjoyed the sweetness and sunshine.

As a bonus, since I had so much fun writing trying to make this historically accurate, guess the location Eragon and Luciana visited and I’ll post the next chapter early 🫣

Luciana’s heart was beating so wildly that it felt as though it would burst out her chest any moment now. Behind her, her wings were flapping just as furiously as she made her final ascent toward the small home Eragon had once shared with his family, before his ambitions brought him to the citadel. Eragon’s mother met her at the door, face pinched and drawn, a monument to a mother’s grief. And though she ached to go to Eragon straight away, Luciana paused, taking the other woman’s hands in her own and squeezing gently.

Despite her grief, the woman managed a small smile. “It was good of you to come.”

“How could I not?” she returned. “What happened was…”

Monstrous? Unspeakable? None of the words seemed to capture the depth of the tragedy.

“He’s in her room.”

Luciana hugged the woman she had come to see as her own mother, then headed for the staircase. The steps seemed endless, but most things that stood between Luciana and her intentions did. Especially when that intention was Eragon. The closer she got to the bedroom, the more the walls narrowed, like she was heading deep into a tunnel where no light could be seen. Eragon kneeled in front of a wooden chest, wings splayed out behind him. His usual poise was gone, lost in despair. He didn’t look up from the doll he cradled, though Luciana was sure he’d heard her approach. Amicus was quiet, watching over the entire scene from his makeshift perch – a small chair, half-pulled out from the desk like the owner had just left, and would be returning any minute now. But she wouldn’t. Luciana didn’t disturb the silence, simply sitting on the ground beside Eragon. It felt like almost an eternity had passed when he finally spoke.

“Have the perpetrators been punished?”

“The adults were stripped of their wings.” She threw a cautious side glance at him. “The child was imprisoned.”

Try as she might, she wasn’t able to keep the disapproval out of her voice. Reddened eyes finally looked up. “You think it’s undeserved?”

She exhaled, long and slow. “It’s not my place to judge.”

“Luciana…"

She was suddenly brought back to memories of their time at the academy, when Eragon was less jaded and more willing to hear out her controversial ideas.

“Devil’s advocate, the humans would say.”

“Satan hardly needs someone to speak on his behalf.”

Still, he played along, carefully dissecting and countering her arguments. Most often, their debates would end in a stalemate, but only after they had annoyed all the students and teachers unfortunate enough to be in their vicinity.

“I just think a child shouldn’t pay for their parents’ actions, is all.”

His jaw twitched. “He was too dangerous. You saw what happened at Christmas–”

“He was a terrified child, Eragon. If Shepha is all-powerful, surely there was another way to deal with him?”

She was dangerously close to sacrilege.

Diverting the topic to safer waters, she nodded at the doll Eragon was holding. “Is that supposed to be Amicus?”

He tightened his grip on the toy. “A birthday gift. I don’t even remember giving it to her.”

He’d hardly made time to come back home after being assigned to council. And the little girl, it seemed, had clung to the only thing she had of her brother: a worn-out toy holding memories of better times and a boy who loved his little sister.

“Why didn’t I make time, Luciana?”

She didn’t have an answer to his question, didn’t have anything that could soothe his despair. All she had was her arms, which winded around him as if the grief could be knocked out if only she held him tighter.

They sat like that through the night, even as the early morning light started filtering through the curtains. In the heat of the sun, Luciana made a silent vow.

I won’t ever leave you. I’ll always be by your side. I promise.

On HS3 season 1 cover, the spotlight is on Donovan (from HSR)

On the season 2 cover, the spotlight is on Dino (from HS1 and HS2)

So, I think the covers will be focusing on one character from each of the three books in HSU. I’m guessing (and hoping) the season 3 cover will be focusing on Raphael (from ABH)

Also I think it’s actually a pretty good way to add more spices to Dino’s story path by letting him touch the Mother of Life’s broken/defective core. He needs that. Seriously. He’s like a bland boiled chicken breast. Maybe with a sprinkle of garlic powder and salt.

Also I’m curious about the 4 swords on the season 1 cover. Will there be horsemen Death and Plague (and maybe War) replacements? Will Dino be replacing one of them since he touched the defective core? If so, who will replace for the others?

Also Greg found some minerals from Heaven which he said are very durable. Maybe those minerals will be used to make the swords for War (if he’s alive) and Hunger and the horsemen replacements? Idk lol.
