You and Gilbert had been friends ever since you could remember, one could not imagine life without the other. From these sorts of friendships love can exist, this was the case for Gilbert. He had fallen hopelessly in love with his best friend.
The two of you shared a special place somewhere in the woods, the place was hidden deep in the forest with some large stones where you would always sit. The two of you have spent many hours there talking about everything. Gilbert didn’t mind if you complained to him about your period pain or changes.
In your turn you didn’t mind if her talked to you about his anxiety or about the future. Gilbert was a soft boy and loved to talk to you about marrying and being a grown up. You thought it was sweet that he was thinking about the future.
Gilbert wanted to tell you that he loves you but he was too shy, and besides you were crushing on Charlie. How could he tell you he loves you if your heart belongs to someone else. Gilbert was already waiting for you on the rocks as he had something hidden in his bag. He lifted up his head as he heard you sing soft in the distance.
You were never afraid to be yourself and that was one of the things Gilbert loved about you, he smiled soft as he listened to your soft singing. As you were in sight Gilbert started to clap at your performance. You froze for a moment not expecting the applause as you then smiled as you saw it was Gilbert.
“Wonderful” – he called out as you took a few bows. Both of you laughed as you seated yourself down next to him. – “So, Gilbert…” – you started, - “I have a lot to tell you.” – Gilbert nodded soft as he looked brief at his bag, knowing something was hidden in there for you. – “I have a lot to tell you as well…” – Gilbert replied as he bit his underlip soft.
“You go first!” – you called out as you let your body bump against him playfully. Gilbert felt butterflies explode in his body as you touched him. – “I … I … I” – he was lost for a moment as your touch made him forget everything for a moment.
“Alright me first me then!” – you replied as you noticed Gilbert forgot what to tell you. “So, I have told you about Charlie right?” – Suddenly Gilbert came to reason and felt his heart sink. – “Yes…” – he replied soft as he tried to keep his smile up. – “I asked him out?” – Gilbert almost choked as you frowned at his behaviour.
“You… you want to go out with him?” – he asked you shy as he started to play with his sleeve. – “Like a date?” – Gilbert then asked you as he felt his heart crack open with sadness and jealousy. – “Yes, Gilbert I thought that was obvious?” – you replied as you rolled your eyes soft. A hidden jealousy took over him and he started to clench his fist without his knowledge. – “Why would you want to go out with him?” – Gilbert called out loud that you were shocked by the tone in his voice.
“Because I love him!” – you called back with an equally loud tone in your voice. Gilbert huffed loud which annoyed you. – “What is wrong with you?” – you called out as you turned your body away from him. Gilbert huffed again as he got of the rock and stood in front of you. – “I don’t know maybe, Charlie!”
“Its just a date, Gilbert!” – you shouted at him as you crossed your arms angry. – “It’s not like I’m going to marry him.” – Gilbert started to puff his chest as he felt like punching something. – “Don’t even think about it!” – he shouted at you as he pushed his finger against your chest. You slapped his hand angry away as you had enough of his childish behaviour.
“I thought you would be happy for me! “ – you shouted back as you jumped of the rock and walked passes him. Gilbert grabbed your hand tight as he looked at you with a stern look. – “Where are you going?” – he called out as he was about to lose it. He wanted you and he couldn’t handle it that you would go on a date with Charlie.
“I’m going on my date!” – you yelled back as you pulled your hand out of his grip. – “No your not!” – he yelled back as he tried to grab you again but you kept pushing him off you. Gilbert kept trying to hold you as he wanted you to stay with him instead of going on that stupid date. – “Y/n just …” – he said between his breaths as he tried to stop you from walking away.
“Let me go!” – you shouted at him. – “I’m going on that date and you aren’t going to stop me!” – you gave him a hard push as he fell to the ground. This time he didn’t get back up and just laid there, you noticed the change in his eyes as he looked like he had lost everything. You wanted to help him up but you paused as your hand was near him.
You closed your hand again and pulled it slowly back to you. – “Gilbert…” – you said soft as he felt himself drown in his sorrow. – “I’m sorry but I’m going out with Charlie…” – you turned around and Gilbert buried his head between his legs as soon as you were turned around.
He started to cry soft as he thought he had lost you, all sorts of scenario’s crossed his mind that could happen on your date. Then the thought crossed his mind that you could kiss him, he cried out louder as he didn’t want you to kiss him. He reached in his bag that was hanging over his shoulder and took a rose from it.
He held the fragile rose in his hand and kept staring at it with puffy eyes. – “I was supposed to give you this… I was supposed to tell you how I felt and now I never will…” – he let the rose fall on the ground as he started to cry again.
You felt sorry for the little fight between the two of you but you couldn’t understand why Gilbert reacted like that. – “It’s just a date?” – you said to yourself as you were walking towards Charlie’s house. You loved Gilbert with all your heart but why couldn’t he understand that you had a crush on Charlie.
“He should be happy for me?” – you said out loud as you stomped angry against some leaves. – “If it was Gilbert I would have been happy for him… would I?” – you started to think about what it would be if Gilbert had a date. – “Would I be so mad?” – you thought to yourself and then a sudden anger crossed your mind as you imagined Gilbert with a girl on a date. You had clenched your jaw without your knowledge as you quickly shook the thoughts away as you were at Charlie’s house.
You knocked on the door as you quickly fixed your dress and hair, you had to supress a squeal as he opened the door. – “Y/n good to see you.” – he replied as he saw you. – “Charlie” – you said with a sweet voice as you tried to act normal and not like a girl that was hopelessly in love. – “come in” – he said as he opened the door further.
You frowned soft as you thought you were going somewhere but he kept signalling for you to come in. you followed him as you noticed his family sitting around the table. – “Everyone this is Y/n, Y/n these are my parents” – you waved awkward at them as you had no idea what was going on. – “Uhm … Charlie I thought we were going somewhere?” – you whispered at him as he laughed loud.
“Don’t be silly Y/n, we are staying home.” – Charlie walked away from you and seated himself at the table with his parents as you kept staring at them. – “Take off your coat and join us.” – his mother called out to you as she smiled bright at you. Her smile made you shiver as you felt uncomfortable around his family. You quickly took off you coat and seated yourself next to Charlie’s father as he smiled weird at you. You swallowed deep as you looked from his parents to him, Charlie was smiling bright as you felt out of place. – “Charlie why don’t you get the game?” – his mother called out as she smiled sweet at you, you swallowed again as you had no interest into playing boardgames with Charlie and his parents.
“So uhm Y/n, how are you?” – his father asked you as he smiled wide at you. – “Uhm… I’m good thank you…” – you replied as you started to fumble your dress. Charlie came moments later back and you were relieved since you couldn’t handle another awkward minute with his parents.
“You’ll love this game!” – his mother called out as she started to open the box, his father helped her set the board and you locked eyes with Charlie quick as you gave him a look that you felt uncomfortable but he just laughed at you. You saw the board in front of you and wanted to sink away in your seat.
“This is not how I imagined my first date…” – you said to yourself as his farther started to explain the difficult rules. You couldn’t follow and they had to explain everything twice to you, after a while they just stopped explaining and told you that you will get it once you play it.
“Gilbert was right…” - you said to yourself as his father had moved his pawn. – “I should have never go on this date.” – you sighed soft as it was your turn to move, you moved your pawn in a direction and Charlie and his parents sighed loud for you to feel uncomfortable .
“What … what did I do?” – you said soft as they all shook their head at your action. – “You just locked yourself up and now you have to wait three turns before you can continue.” – Charlie called out as he couldn’t believe you would make a move like that. – “I’m sorry?” – you replied uncertain. – “Don’t worry child, not everyone can be as intellectual as us.” – his mother called out as he started to laugh.
You gave her a look as you felt offended. – “Excuse me, what did you just say to me?” – you called out as Charlie widened his eyes at you. – “I beg your pardon!” – she called out as she raised her eyebrow. Charlie kept shaking his head to you, to not engage but you had enough of their silly boardgame and insults.
“I think you heard me!” – you called back as his father started to clench his fist. – “That is not a tone that we respect here, Young lady!” – he called out as he slammed his fist against the table. – “Fine, than I’ll just leave, I was bored anyway.” – his father started to puff annoyed as you got up and took your coat, you walked outside but Charlie paused you in the door opening. – “Y/n just apologize and come back inside?” – he asked you as he held your arm.
You looked past him to his parents. – “No, thank you! I’d rather eat grass than stay a minute longer with your family!” – you pulled your hand away as you started to walk away. Charlie shrugged his shoulders like he didn’t care that you walked away and closed the door behind you.
“What did I ever see in him?” – you called out as you kept running as far away from his house and family. – urgh… his family is so… and Charlie he didn’t even defended me!” – you called out as you started to get angry. – “If Gilbert was there, he would have defended me!” – you started to sigh as you thought about the fight from earlier and how much you felt sorry for leaving him like that.
“I’m never going on a date again!” – you called out as you wiped some tears away. – “None of this would have happened, if I had just stayed with him.” – you made your way back to your special place as you hoped he would still be there. – “Gilbert…” – you whispered soft as you felt your heart fluster at his name.
“I never needed Charlie…” – you suddenly said to yourself as you paused for a moment. – “I had everything I wanted right in front of me!” – you started to breath quick as you felt like an idiot for not seeing that Gilbert was the one for you, you started to run as you wanted to see him again.
You slowed down as you arrived at your special place. – “Gilbert?” – you said soft as you looked around. You wanted to walk towards the rocks but paused as you noticed a rose laying on the ground. You picked it up and looked at it as you felt your heart skip beats, you smelled it brief as you kept walking towards the rocks.
“Gilbert?” – you called out again as you didn’t noticed him, you held the rose against your chest as you looked around in panic. – “I’m to late!” – you called out as you fell to your knees, - “I’m to late!” – you started to cry soft as you thought you had lost him. – “Gilbert I’m sorry, I love you!” – you called out as you lowered your hand with the rose in it, that it was touching the ground.
“You love me?” – you suddenly heard, you lifted your head to see Gilbert walking from behind the rocks with puffy eyes. You were shocked for a moment but nodded fast as you watched him come closer to you. – “I do… I’m so sorry for only realising it now…” – you lowered your head again as you felt ashamed for figuring it out to late.
Gilbert kneeled in front of you and lifted up your hand with the rose in it as he smiled soft. – “I was going to give this to you and tell you that I loved you too but then you wanted to go on a date with Charlie and…” – he started as you interrupted him. – “I’m never going on a date again! Charlie let me play board games with his family and they were so rude to me and…” – you started to cry as you felt stupid for ever having a crush on him.
Gilbert shushed you as he let his finger go over your cheek. – “That’s all in the past now…” – “Oh, Gilbert…” – you called out as you wrapped your arms around him. – “Can you forgive me, I was blind but I know now where my heart belongs and it’s with you!” – Gilbert pressed his arms around you as he wanted to feel you in his embrace. – “The only thing that matters is us, right now.” – he whispered back as you pulled away.
You started to laugh between your tears as you looked at Gilbert, Gilbert started to laugh as well as he moved his hands to you. – “I love you so much Y/n!” – Gilbert started to cup your cheeks as he moved his head closer to you, you also moved closer and wrapped your arms around his neck.
He then pressed his lips onto yours as he finally had the girl of his dreams, he felt his heart melt into one with yours as he kissed you passionate. You were still holding the rose in your hand as you felt your heart beat faster at every touch. You forgot about your date with Charlie and his family as you only had eyes for Gilbert.
