as an arachnophobe trying to participate in bug positivity and education to decrease my fears and increase my appreciation of the natural world: the only thing worse about the large spider* I saw in my bathroom is the fact that it disappeared.
Is it between the shower curtain and liner? Is it in the shelf? Is it in a different room? I don’t know but I am. afraid. and I need to go to sleep. and I will sleep, but. man I just started changing my antidepressant, so I was already coping with feeling anxiety for the first time in a while, but this is ridiculous.
*I understand that the spider is also scared, and we both wish we hadn’t seen the other. It’s either been camping out in the potted plant that’s been in the bathroom all winter (possible but unlikely) or it got in from an open door and can’t get back out. And brother. I’m too scared to CNR**. I mean, I’m a big proponent of that one, but the combined arachnophobia and the spider’s absence make that Really Difficult.
**CNR is short for “Catch ‘N’ Release”, which is short for “Catch And Release”.
anyway. photo under the cut.
Bug posting!!
Interesting find! I was doing some planting and when I emptied out one of my pots, I found an “underground” nest! I poked at it (with garden gloves on) because at first I thought it was an old mantis sac, but was surprised when it fell away and revealed live larvae in combs! I’m mostly interested that it looks like a regular nest I’d find anywhere else.
It was pure luck that I dumped this out and wasn’t hurt. I didn’t even notice a yellow jacket presence at my back door. A few minutes after I started putting fresh dirt in the pot, a couple showed up and started buzzing around to look for the nest. My back porch gardening has been unfortunately cut short for today because I wasn’t going to wait for them to figure out it was me.
I hadn’t seen this before, I imagined an underground nest would be tunneled out like an ant colony. Figured I’d share!

by any chance are you aware of the longan lanternfly
Had to look them up to see if they had any relation to the invasive Spotted Lanternfly— it does say here that they are a new invasive species but there’s no like Big article that talks about these guys if it’s true (Mostly the Spotted Lanternfly comes up). Feel free to correct me !
Outside of discussion whether these guys are invasive or not they’ve got really pretty colors and a funny horn the wings remind me of the matrix
