Journeys with Grief... Joe and his words: <When I was 8, my big brother John died from a fall while mountain climbing. He was the oldest of 8 kids, and the immediate impact of his death was devastating for my parents and siblings. The grief eroded and re-shaped the previously small and safe world we had all lived in. Later, when my wife Karen and I had two small kids of our own, my mom Ruth and dad John and grandmother Sweetie and Aunt Mary Helen were all killed by a drunk driver. They were on their way home from a dinner celebrating my parents 46th wedding anniversary. We lost so much that day--love and connection and history--a vacuum where once there was a solid core. But, we also had the memory of my parents turning their grief over my brother's death into something else--Something outside of themselves--something that connects with others. So, many years later, I am trying to honor their memory, hoping to evolve, and wanting to connect with the world, with a more absorbent heart and softer, more sympathetic eyes.
