Aziraphale please! He’s been through enough!!!
I’ve been thinking about the hospital segment in Half Man the entire morning and somehow I keep going back to my initial reaction right as I was watching it. And no matter how much I try to come up with all sorts of arguments, I find the dialogue in the first half of that segment to be a bit much. I’ll explain what I mean by that.
It felt too grandiose and too much of a tonal shift compared to the dialogue up until then. It felt slightly artificial and almost like the lines were written in a way that made it extra clear that both are engaging in heavy dialogue in which important things are being said. Which I can understand, but perhaps the use of too many metaphors was too on the nose. “I’m thr soundtrack to your greatest moments”, you know what I mean?
The abundance of figures of speech transformed it almost into the interpretation of what they would have said in a more raw, gritty exchange of words (which is how they talked to each other up until that point in the story).
But then the tone changes in the second half. It goes back to what feels more intrinsec to the story, even when Niall talks about how shitty his life turned out and the shift in attitude takes place in Ruben. It was like a transition of dialogue from a stage play to dialogue in a tv show.
I think that it really depends on the type of story and if the lines match the character. In Black Sails, we have similar type of dialogue exchange in which there is this intelectualization of actions and feelings that is being verbalized, but in that context, it made sense because it was balanced and spread throughout the script. Whereas in Half Man, it sort of comes out of nowhere. And more than that, it falls on Ruben to deliver the bulk of the over the top lines in that scene. And based on the trailer, he’s also the one saying the line about Niall not marching to the beat of his own drum which again, it’s a platitude. And it all strikes me a bit odd when such phrases are being used in what is overall a really good script.
bad day today. need me a hug. :((

HEY FOLKS! I’VE SHOTGUNNED THREE SEASONS OF THIS PODCAST IN SEVEN DAYS! DON’T WORRY ABOUT ME!
JONATHAN FUCKING SIMS
I love him. He’s so desperate to not be a monster. He’s so far down the road already. He’s so sure that everything is his fault and that makes him such easy prey for everything that’s interested in ripping out his guts. Please Jesus take backup with you more often Jon, I’m worried about you. There’s probably more I have to say right now but I’m currently obsessed with the dreams that Jon’s apparently been hiding from everyone because that episode. It was everything I’ve ever wanted.
The moment of Jon just...deciding to trust his people, because he needs to be kept human and he’s tired of distrusting them, that shit ruined me. Can’t wait to see what happens when the Institute is under the control of the Lonely and everyone starts drifting away from their Archivist just as he tries to cling to them to stay a person. GOD I love him, he’s probably one of my favorite characters in...anything, to be honest. Remind me to torture Jon in a fic.

Holy shit... he caused so many deaths, and then killed all of the Alphas. And destroyed Apollo! And you saw the holograms crawling to where their corpses would end up. Oh my god. Ohhh no
