During the Ford Formula, James went through a serious accident, even his car was submerged at the bottom of the lake. However, he started trying to tell a dirty joke when he met someone who tried to save him.......

‘He hit a bump on the edge of the track and that was enough to launch him. His car flew through a Shell advertising hoarding, breaking off a massive great piece of wood that was holding it up, and I thought: “This looks very nasty indeed”.

‘I've never done it before or since, but I got out of my car and went running after him. I found bits of his car all along the way, from both the front and the back, so he'd obviously been cartwheeling along at fantastic speed. Then I found his rollover bar, which he had modified to clear his head because he was taller, so I feared the worst. ‘I got to the edge of the lake and there was nothing to be seen. I looked more closely into the lake and saw his car submerged on the bottom and I thought: “Oh my God!”

‘I was standing there with the water around my ankles getting ready to dive under the car to see if I could get him out. In that split second, about twenty yards away, James rose to the surface and stood up, with the water up to his chest.

‘He looked as if he'd been made up for a horror movie: blood running down one side of his face and mud the other, oil on his nose, reeds in his mouth, water sloshing around in his goggles. I helped him to the shore and got him to lie down. He obviously wasn't quite all there because he started trying to tell me a dirty joke!’.
