Review: One thing I like about one-shot series is that it allows me to pick and choose the stories I want to read. The Noticing of Lucy Weasley was the first story that I read from Realmer06′s Pieces universe. Each story in the Pieces universe focuses on the next-gen children, and this one obviously, is about Percy’s daughter Lucy. While this isn’t one of my favorites from the set (I’ll link them below), this story has enough heart to make you want to read more from the author.
The set-up for the story is fairly ordinary, but the story’s focus on two major events allows it to tell a short, but sweet tale. There are some issues with characterization - James’ jerkiness feels a bit cartoonish, and since it is what’s used to drive the plot forward, becomes hard to ignore. However, the story does it’s portrayal of Lucy and Percy very well, and in a sense, this is Percy’s story just as much as it is Lucy’s.
Overall, the story feels and reads like one of those Disney Christmas storybook collections*, and if you liked reading those, you probably will like reading this.
* I actually had to go search up the name of these things because I honestly could not find a better way to describe the series, and the storybook collection’s short, heartwarming tales were exactly how this series felt.
While I like the characters in this story overall, there was a certain aspect about the tale that stopped them from transcending into more three dimensional people. However, this may just be due to the story’s characters themselves - since Lucy Weasley is essentially an OC and Percy isn’t one of the major characters in the original series either.
What I do like about the author’s collection is that they always manage to highlight a trait from the original characters and help the reader appreciate something they may have never considered before. Lucy’s story wasn’t one of my top 3 from Pieces but it was quite close to being one of my three favorites in their collection.
My three favorites from the collection, in no particular order of preference are:
1. A Molly Weasley Tradition: Knitting Christmas jumpers is a Molly Weasley tradition, and not one either of them intend to give up.
One of the reasons this one stands out for me is because I never considered a day where Molly Weasley couldn’t knit a sweater. And I know it’s a stupid thought cause at the end of the day these are just characters, but it was still a sweet story to read.
2. Pawn to C3: Teaching Lily chess started as a way to keep her occupied and out of everyone's hair. It grew into much more than that.
This one also contains one of my favorite characterizations of Ron.
3. Charlie Weasley and the Reason Why Not: Dom asks Charlie an interesting question, and when he makes her work for the answer, he gets more than he ever expected.
This story has a lot of charming aspects to it and that’s all I’ll say about it.
