Post 5- Real world example
In my family specifically, I have a cousin who identifies as a homosexual men. While growing up, he always was interested in toys that were not heteronormative, and preferred to play with us (girl cousins) versus the other boys around. Nevertheless, he was accepted by my family and never was judged based on his gender orientation. A few years ago, he was diagnosed with HIV and it was devastating for everyone.
After recently talking to my cousin, I asked him some questions about his experience living with HIV. He states, it was a difficult thing to cope with and facing reality living with HIV. Once diagnosed, he made an effort to get informed about the virus. He learned about the different medical treatments available to remain healthy but because he has no insurance he gets minimal care. HIV has affected his social life and sent him into depression soon after being diagnosed. He struggles with being in “normal relationships” and finds himself keeping it a secret but practice safe sex. My cousin, like most affected by the virus are still young, and being a black homosexual men he faces many challenges. He has found motivation and strength through religion and is determined to stay positive.
