What are your thoughts on the newest Emma adaptation?
I really loved Emma 2020!
I think Anya Taylor-Joy did an amazing job; I very much appreciated this film not pulling punches when it came to Emma’s characterization. Though I absolutely adore Emma 2009, Emma presents a lot softer and tender. I think that’s a very valid take, but I love that Emma in the 2020 version got to be a jerk. A well-meaning jerk but still a jerk.
Also, the visuals were stunning. The colours! At last, a feast for my eyes! About the only gripe I had visually is with some of the costumes. There were some odd choices that I didn’t understand, even on a visual rather than historic level. For the most part though, beautiful!
I also enjoyed the dynamic between Emma and Knightley. I always do! I love their banter. The addition of the nose bleed in the confession scene was great. I feel like Jane Austen would have appreciated it, both from a comic standpoint and a characterization one.
Oh, and Mr Woodhouse! His moments were such a delight.
And the servants too! I adored the servants. They added both grounding and comedy. In Jane Austen adaptions (even in the books, really), servants are ‘invisible’ and do not feature. The servants in Emma 2020, though lacking dialogue felt like they at least got telling Moments, you know?
As you can probably tell, I really loved Emma 2020. I’m so glad I got to see it in theatres before NZ went on lockdown!
