the stroke of luck for me in the way brand new day ends wrt peter and ned is that whether or not ned actually remembers peter or not, both the years they have been separated and the circumstances of the amnesia have given peter and ned (and mj) the sort of distance that they could've never achieved otherwise and thus the opportunity to view each other in another light. even if ned does remember peter, he has four (?) years to catch up on, and they both have changed. who is this peter now? he looks different, he acts different, but so does ned. what did he think of him in those handful of moments before he knew? and then if he doesn't remember peter, he has to walk back into an ease that settles comfortably in his bones. but he does not know peter. and peter also does not know him, as he is. they have to rediscover each other, one way or another. and in this space of discovery and tentative exploration, where peter is tender in a way ned doesn't ever encounter (whoooo would be so gentle with him but his best friend?) and ned curious and bolder than he might've been otherwise (because the distance has removed walls that were there before due to attachment or consideration or modesty and now he can ask what he needs to know, what peter needs to be asked), what could grow out of them? it could just be this same, well worn friendship peter remembers and hopes for and expects. or it might be another thing entirely, on top of that. when else will they get this opportunity? it's literally now or never.
