Atomfall #15☢️(End) - Zara The Silent Gamer
Atomfall is an a nuclear apocalypse rpg based in an alternate timeline where the Windscale disaster causes the area to be permanently locked down. No one can enter and no one can leave. You wake up underground, with no memory of who you are or how you got there. But now it's up to you to decide the fate of people and find the Interchange.
Atomfall is an experience I am glad to have had. Ever since first seeing the trailer at the game awards, I've been excited to play it. The fact that it's set in my home country of England was just the icing on the cake. Hearing English slang in a video game never gets less funny to me.
The graphics are lovely to look at and Rebellion really captured Cumbria's beauty. I love the village's design and the local NPCs and how they react to you depending on how you talk to you. One I spoke to about hearing voices and he told me to be on my way, shutting down any other questions I wanted to ask him. I couldn't return later or try again, that was my chance and I blew it.
Does it have flaws? Yes. While I enjoyed a talk with most of the voiced NPCs, one I didn't understand the role of was the Voice on the Phone. While they do ring in whenever you pass a red phone box (after some progress) and continue to give you their vague words of wisdom, I feel like they could have been easily written out of the story completely. Also the none interactable npcs dialogue could be a little too repetitive at times.
While this game may be in the same vain as Fallout, I think it's unfair to compare them and, does a disservice to Atomfall. I would love another Atomfall game in the future, Rebellion willing. This is a great start and I hope they carry this momentum forwards into their next games. 4/5.
Atomfall, while set in North Cumbria (Cumberland) seems to be filled with people from Yorkshire 🤔 Cumbrian voice actors would have chomped at the bit to have the opportunity to voice act in a survival action game. This isn't the first time where the many Cumbrian accents have been removed from media and advertising, there is of course the "Born in Carlisle, Raised in the Royal Navy" recruitment ad, where they replaced the man's Carlisle accent with a Geordie accent, even though they are different.
Rebellion Developments is a video game developer based and founded in Oxford and I am going to try my hardest to hide my biases, but something I have noticed from being Cumbrian my entire life and interacting with southern English people is that they have no idea where Cumbria is if you don't mention the Lake District, then the next sentence that comes from them refers to either going there on holiday or God forbid, having a second home there.
I am inclined to believe that no one from Cumbria worked on the game, as the naming conventions for characters and locations don't reflect actual Cumbrian Toponymy even though it is a widely studied topic in the area because of Cumbria's history of being passed around from kingdom to kingdom, the pronunciation of words such as "Moor" caught me off guard, as they are pronounced like 'morr' less so than the Cumbrian pronunciation of 'moo-er'. Cumbria was once a Celtic region, longer than other parts of England, originally Cumbria spoke a dialect of ancient Welsh called Cumbric, and there are still names that reflect that especially natural landmarks, locations and mountains such as Blencathra, Penrith, Helvellyn. It's frustrating to have the constant bombardment that everyone loves our county but can't stand the locals, thinking our accent is vulgar or offensive to the ear, taking the piss out our regional dialects - I find it incredibly tiresome in fact.
The Character of "Nancy" was the closest to sounding Cumbrian but was still off, however she did an amazing imitation considering there aren't many examples of spoken Cumbrian accents to take inspiration from, all in all it felt very Blanket Northern, tea bag advert, inspirational Tesco delivery advert - which is a shame because accent diversity is more than slight twangs from Yorkshire. However, Yorkshire is an acceptable accent to the Southern English, much like Geordie but is still often ridiculed.
I felt ridiculed playing Atomfall.
