SayMaxWell - Portal 2 - Reconstructing Science [Remix]
I am doomed to hope and trust; same as I am, with my prehistoric savannah-born physiology, doomed to be prone to addiction to sugar and as I am doomed to crave human contact; as a bird is doomed to flee the winter sothwards and as a catepillar is doomed to weave its cocoon; so am I doomed to humbly yield to the unknown and make a leap of faith that my love will outlive my soul
It’s Holy Week, so in lieu of WIP Wednesday, I thought I’d share a poem I wrote on Ash Wednesday (2/22/23). Maybe it’ll be even a little bit as cathartic/encouraging for someone to read as it was for me to write.
Valley of Dry Bones
In this valley of dry bones I lie
Losing faith in the living
Losing faith like decomposition
One small decay at a time.
Deconstructing each breath
from skin
from sinew
from substance
until nothing is left
but a heap of bones,
broken and weary.
Did You really say…?
Are You still just if…?
Why would You…?
My trust is a hollow, dessicated thing.
Speak, Lord,
and tell these bones to live again!
Restore to me the breath of life
Strengthen the shriveled sinews of my trust
Remind me that Your body was broken
to make mine whole again.
If the death and resurrection of Christ is humanity's salvation, if the work of salvation is already complete, then the Church is free to bring the Kingdom of God to earth. If we do not have to win souls for the Kingdom of God in heaven, then all the energy Christians expend can go towards making it possible for the Kingdom of God to exist for people on earth. The love of Christ, the freedom, the joy, the charity, the provision, the wonder and awe -- these things can be what the Church is about.
If the work of salvation is incomplete, then no other work matters. The time spent feeding the poor, caring for the sick, loving the widows and orphans -- these things would be a waste. The only benefit would be their potential to open their hearts to the saving words of Jesus. They would have no intrinsic benefit. For what is life on earth but a flickering moment against the everlasting inferno of eternity?
But we know that the here and now matters. We do not live as if it doesn't. And I cannot imagine God making a world, a life, an age, where the only point was to look ahead.

After listening to many hours of public hearings about defunding the police and fixing systemic racism in our city, now is the time to be critical of our institutions and creative with how we move forward.
I've learned so much these past few days. I'm both excited for change and worried that our city will choose the easiest route, instead of the most innovative and inspiring.
It's time to reimagine what our city can be and put it to action!
What does change look like to you? How can we restructure our cities and institutions? How can we unlearn what's been engraved in our minds and grow towards an anti-racist, decolonized world? ~

((Submissions open for Issue Three: Reconstructing))
1. First make a list of experienced fearful situations or objects, rank them from high to low 2. Write down your fearful thoughts and beliefs, become aware of these 3. Make it a goal to confront the fearful situations or objects 4. Let your fearful thoughts be disproven, this is very important 5. Become aware of your thoughts again after confrontation, sit with them 6. Repeat, repeat.. and repeat! When you are confronting these situations, and more importantly, let yourself accept that your thoughts may not be true, you are training your brain! Make those connections stronger to help you become less anxious. By repeating, you are making connections stronger, this make a habit, a habit becomes unconscious and before you know it you are living it. Tip: if you find a situation still too scary, imagine it first! Focus hereby on letting your thoughts be disproven, and how that feels A small example: A thought could be: ‘everyone is always looking at me’ To disapprove this: ‘is it true? What else are people looking at instead of me?’ Give it a go!
