GIVES MY LIFE MEANING
Anon, you don't know how much this message means to me. Thank you so much for sharing your story, and I'm grateful that I could help!
So, since you were so kind as to share, here's the story of my Mituna:
It's my mom.
Her disorder is a different kind of disorder than Mituna's in a lot of ways--she has Alzheimer's disease. It's a long disease, something she's had now probably for at least ten years. It wasn't so bad at first. Now, she has trouble differentiating me from her little sister.
My mom's not the lady that raised me anymore, it's true, but she's still my mom. I love her just as much as I ever have! It's true that it's frustrating to try and explain things to her when you just have to repeat yourself ten minutes later. It's true that it's annoying how she tells the same stories over and over. It's true that a lot of things about her have changed on a fundamental level, but I still love her.
And so does my dad! The Mituna in my life has a bonus--she's got a Latula. My parents have been married for 42 years. I know he gets frustrated sometimes, but he loves her too. That's something I never doubt. I drew a picture of Mituna and Latula for my dad for Christmas, and when I told him about the characters, he started crying.
So, yeah. It's pretty personal for me too, anon.
Mituna and Latula are intensely powerful characters because of exactly what it is that they represent. Hussie isn't pulling his punches here--Mituna's got some serious problems, and they aren't going away. (I would think Aranea would have healed him were it within her powers to do so.)
Latula is kind of painted as a silly, carefree airhead, but her reactions and thoughts and feelings concerning Mituna are way deeper. She didn't HAVE to stay with Mituna. She didn't HAVE to keep caring about him. I don't think any of their friends would have blamed her one bit if she had said at any point, "I can't do this any longer."
But she didn't. And THAT is what's so powerful about her. She grieved, I am certain, but then she picked up the pieces and she looked at her matesprit, and she still loved him. Even after an eternity in the dream bubbles, she still loved him.
Just the way my dad still loves my mom.
Anon, I hope it is comforting to know that there are Latulas in our world too, and I hope your sister finds hers.
If I was rich, I would commission every artist I know to draw me Mituna and Latula doing random things and then print out the pictures as big as I could and put them all over my walls. And then I would roll in my feels forever.
