I just wanna, yell about all the ideas I have about these designs. Like, I'm houng feral right now with no one to tell. So have a break, it's gunna be long and I don't want a "colors of the sky" situation.
So with each de(a)mon I took some time listening tontheor audios.
+Vega had some strong visuals for me. He loves being a demon. Sadistic or not, he was once someone who fought besides his brethern against the Sovereigns. In Imperium and Prime his priority is always the freedom of demons.
With him I wanted to emphasis that ravine of demons and humans. A monsterus form that would evoke the name demon from even the unempowered. Reject conformity. Be the creature written about in old theology text. He IS the ancient evil they feared. The one who grew hatred in the hearts of men.
So I want more stereotypical with the black goat. I gave him fangs and claws, you can never confuse him for a domestic animal. In almost mockery of human fear he ornaments himself with gold. Delicate treasures his only dress.
For Vega I wanted the themes of Christian fear and greed. The goat isn't inheritly evil, it was given the weight of everyone's sin before they sacrificed it. I thought Vega, at least an earlier incarnation of him, would feel the sentiment. He says something like that to Warden when he talks about the weight of remembering.
+Cealum is almost the flip. He's small and unimpossing. Innocent and Simple by his choice. Empathy deamons are equated to children. To the point they are erased from human perception for their own protection. In a way, it is it's own sacrifice. So he is the lamb to Vega's goat.
I know Cealum is meant to be dumb. I just don't believe it's possible for anyone to be. He's uninformed but willing to learn. We're told he was at risk of falling when the Choir chose to assign him Freelancer. In saving them he could save himself.
Because of the inherent isolation of invisibility, the lack of perception in the human realm, he would be forced to seek comfort only in his fellow de(a)mons. He doesn't get the same choices as the others. His presence cannot be used to make a statement like Vega or Gavin's could. He only has Aria and Freelancer.
So design wise I went with a sheep. Soft simple colors and an emphasis on knitted clothing. I wanted to ise wool while also having a visual representation of close bonds. Besides that I wanted him to appear childlike, really hammer in his inexperience.
+Gavin's themes are comparatively straight forward. He recognizes and embraces his freewill. He understands and fight his constraints as an 'other' in both realms.
When it came to his design I had narrowed it down to 4 ideas. Peacock, Fox, Goldfinch, and Butterfly. I ended up using Fox and Butterfly for other designs but their means are diffrent there.
Goldfinch are a small species of bird that were often kept as children's pets. In paintings they were often depicted in small cages or tied to strings to keep them contained. They were seen as nothing more than a pretty toy. I felt it fit when compared to how Incubus are treated.
With foxes, their fur is considered a luxury. They're kept in cages and bred to be more colorful, then raised to be slaughtered for some wealthy human's coat. It reminded me of how the Incubus are taught to survive.
Butterflies were the more pleasant idea. They start as worms, struggling to survive. Then after so many hardships they breakdown and reimerge beauty and free to fly away.
The one that won was the Peacock. While capable of flight, it's limited. Peafowl are often raised as pets. I can't remember if they're eaten, I know their eggs are. They're a type of phesent. The purpose of a Peacock's beauty is to impress others of it's species. All in the pursuit of survival. At the same time it's decorative tail leaves it open to predation. It reminded me of imperium. Of what Vindemiator, and what most Incubus have to do just so they don't starve.
I'm not saying they don't enjoy what they do. In that way a peacock is the best representation of that. They preen their feathers, puff up their chest and enjoy the admiration of others. When you're safe to be yourself you can shine brighter than any artificial lamp, perhaps even brighter than the star you were named for?
With Gavin's design I'm leaning more into elegance. While he is naturally beautiful, perceptible in his inhumanity, he would dress in a more stylishly comfortable way. He looks otherworldly but he chooses the mundane. Lots of flirty pinks and regal purples. I would highlight him with silver rather than gold.
+On the note of birds, Avior. He's an Inchoate, one that was so frustrating in his pursuit of learning his own teacher was delighted when Avior faced the mirror with one of his charges.
I gave him the common raven. Ravens are some of the most intelligent kinds of birds. They're sociable, love to learn, and enjoy problem solving. They're fiercely loyal, holding their chosen flock/family above all else. This is why Odin was said to have two of them.
They're also seen as harbingers, warnings of hard times. In the American south they're often signs of Autumn, warning of the harsh winter to come. Their intelligent gaze give the feeling of unese. A flock of them are even called a murder, moving like a black storm over the sky.
Avior is also represented by a needle and thread. Sewing was once considered a communal task. People would bring their sewing with them, gathering together while they worked on their task to chat. It's also a sign of repairing, bringing together the broken pieces.
So with the visuals, Avior isn't really someone who spent a lot of visible time in Elegy. His apperceive would reflect that. I'm imagining those round, reflective eyes. Feathers coming out of the skin. Dark talons and a mane of black reflecting iridescent light. Clothing is were I have trouble. He would need something, I'm playing with the idea of a stitched coat. Just enough so he would be "decent" for the brief moments people could see him.
Then he would have a more human appropriate form he would take just during dates with Starlight. Hmmm.
+Camilpardis, the falcon. This may seem like an odd choice but bear with me. Have you ever seen a Kestral? They're so cute.
Falconry is a sport. People keep falcons and use them to hunt small game and pest. It's an animal kept for a task, but it's still a dangerous predator. It's one that allows people a taste of freedom. It still has it's wings and claws though.
They're also diverse. Falcons come in a myriad of colors and patterns. That leads into the other idea for Camilpardis. Paintings, still images made from memories. His work with the department seems focused in memory altering. Brush strokes to capture what once was.
Since Cam works with the department, and seeks to calm his listeners, he would probably look quite human. I see him with delicate round glasses, dressed in thick layered fabrics with painted designs. He'd wear warm colors, juxtaposed with cold from the fabric's patterns. Under it all, I think he wouldn't pass for human. Without the heavy coat and skirt you would see his patterned skin, his carefully tucked wings, and the off proportion of his torso and neck.
+Braccium will be the final one I talk about tonight. I decided to give him the Snake. Specifically a water snake. No particular species, just a freshwater dweller.
In Christian media the snake is used to represent the temptation of evil. I've heard it two ways, Satan took over the body of a serpent or he turned into one. Either way he convinced Eve to take the apple. The serpent was punished, its legs removed to force it to crawl across the ground in repentance.
In a very loose way this could be compared to Braccium's current predicament with the Sovereigns. It's not really why I picked it for him though. I just wanted to mention it as I grew up in the "Bible belt" of the American South.
Really, snakes have been used to represent medicine and healing, physical and mental. A snake's greatest trait is its ability to shed its skin. They're survivors, they're ancient, they're adaptive and endurant. They're also venomous and fast. They strike and kill.
Braccium is a Deathwalker and he is just as ancient as Vega. He is of the river. He helps those who pass shed their fear and memories as they move onto what waits. Unlike Camilpardis' Serenity, Braccium's is colder, sadder. There are no open arms, there is only quiet company as the river seeps into you like poison.
For his design I want to focus on that cold beauty. He only knows humans in their worst moment, and from a war waged long ago. Sleek, graceful, and unlike humans. His appearance is deamonic as he has never been among humanity until Sunshine. His limbs are willowy, his scales dull, but his fangs are still sharp. Venom still wells in his mouth, still potent and ready to give enemies a fate worse than death.
