ELECTRIC VEHICLE
Electric vehicle (EV) manufacture is accelerating globally. China is in the driving seat – by 2025, 7m (20%) of cars sold yearly will be plug-in hybrids or battery-powered, to clear smog & reduce dependence on oil. But do consumers want EVs? They’re more costly than petrol/diesel options & their batteries pose extra fire hazards. A new direction of travel

NOISELESS
Electric vehicles are noiseless - & that's a problem. A Vehicle Sound for Pedestrians (VSP) is needed so we step out of the way. EU & US rules require new electric cars to emit an audible sound at <18.6 mph. At higher speeds, the car's low-pitched whistle (from cutting through the air) & tyre-on-road noise alert us it's coming. 55% of new car sales by 2040 could be electric. The sound of the city will change

CAR
Move on! Stalled sales signal that we're past peak car. 2018 worldwide car sales 94.2m, down 1m on 2017. Youngsters are turning away from the killer transportation app of the 20th c. UK: driving tests per year by 17 year-olds are down 28% in 10 years. USA: only 26% of 16 year olds got a driving licence in 2017. 36 years ago, it was 50%. The end of the road - a car is no longer a badge of success, nor the most convenient conveyance from A to B
