Last year, two college students started an exercise club for the homeless. Now, they are biking 100 miles across Massachusetts to end homelessness.
Reed Fox is a junior as the University of Massachusetts. In his spare time, he volunteers at Street Soccer USA where he helps use soccer as a way to get homeless people off the streets. Through this experience, he's witnessed firsthand the power that physical activity has on the homeless.
This experience also inspired him to start the Northampton Exercise Club for the Homeless along with his co-founder Mike McGrath. He partnered with Mercy Health Care for the Homeless so that he can use the drop-in center space as a host for a weekly exercise club for homeless men, women, and children. This club allows homeless people to forget about their situations for at least a few hours each week and encourages them to start improving their lives. The ultimate goal is to help build enough confidence and self-esteem in these individuals for them get motivated and connect to housing, education, and/or employment opportunities.
Last year, Reed raised $1,250 on StartSomeGood to help launch this club. Now, he's looking for more support to help jumpstart his latest efforts to benefit the club. Reed and Mike are raising funds for 100 Miles to End Homelessness--they will be biking 100 miles across Massachusetts to help raise funds for their club and awareness for the homeless. A small portion of funds will go toward the costs of completing the ride, but the majority will go right to the club participants in the form of club apparel and healthy snacks and drinks. And, if they raise enough, they'll be able to open another club in another nearby location. This would mean helping even MORE homeless people get off the streets!
To anyone who has ever needed a boost to help get their life back on track, this most certainly is a cause worth sharing--so let's help Reed and Mike get their campaign to its tipping point, and beyond!
