Friends. I took this photo when I volunteered at the Laotian Refugee Camp in Ubon Ratchathani, Thailand in 1980. As the news is once again filled with stories about refugees I want to remind everyone who these stories are about. They're real people who have lost everything. They have fled persecution, war or famine and are just looking for that basic of all human needs; a home. These smiling children lived in simple bamboo huts with their families. They had virtually no personal possessions yet they managed to find companionship and joy in the simple things. JANA. Hossein fled to Jordan on foot from the war and violence in Syria, met Ilaf in Zaatari camp, they married, and some time later their first, Jana, was born, but with two serous medical conditions which would be devastating to a young couple even in the most stable circumstances and with the finest medical care. Little Jana has anal aplasia and tracheal fistula, which means she has no anal opening and has an open tear in her trachea. Aid organizations made an initial surgery (tracheal suturing and a colostomy) possible so that Jana can drink liquids (she survives only on milk) and can evacuate through tubing inserted through an incision in her abdomen. But a follow-up surgery is required. When someone told them about HumaniTerra, a non-profit with a medical mission in Amman, which offers such pediatric surgeries and follow-up treatments for free to refugees, plans were made for Jana to get onto that surgery. This is a first picture of one story that TSOS as captured to show the dedicated work of HumaniTerra, Surgeons of the world provided.
